I have factory speakers in my 1980 Olds Cutlass Supreme - and they are terrible.

I HAD a Pioneer CD/Deck up until about a month ago (I forgot the faceplate in the deck over the weekend and Monday morning it was gone, along with busted metal around the door lock).

Clarion ProAudio CD player

Orion Cobalt 260 sub amp

Orion 5" seperates up front

Orion 6x9 in rear

2 Dr. Crankenstein 10" subs each in seperate bandpass box in trunk.

Sort of given up on improving it anymore, all my money goes into the theater now.

Sony Xplod single-disc CD head unit with Xplod ten-disc CD changer in the trunk. These came together in a package from Circuit City for $400. I am using the factory speakers in my 2001 Honda Accord LX-V6 coupe. They are good enough.

This thread is, IMO, more interesting when you combine car stereo specifications and fast food wrappers, etc. :D
As for me:
Generic casio cd player, probably 10 watts per channel (ouch).
A UFO-shaped CD carrier which holds up to 40 Cds... tiny little thing, it's great! Car playlist: Nick Cave and Mark Burgess's Sun and the Moon currently.
A beat up 12" color television in the trunk, lying upside-down. It's the TV I owned before the mammoth WEGA took over. (In fact I think the WEGA shoved the poor little thing into the trunk.)
A corkboard/dry erase board combination, unopened, which may assist my roomates in remembering that we actually have to pay bills each month! What a novel concept.
Cheers,
Joseph

In a 98' Bonneville I have

Headunit: Eclipse 5341

Mids/highs: JL Audio XR5.25CS

Amp for mids/highs: Nakamichi 1002 (100x2 watts)

Subwoofer: JL Audio power wedge 12W0 ported

Sub Amp: Rockford Fosgate punch 60x2

Upgrades comming soon:

Replace 12W0 with a 12W3 in a custom fiberglass enclosure of my own creation.

Upgrade sub amp to possibly a JL 500/1 or 300/2

Replace eclipse with newer headunit.

Everything was installed by myself using Stinger 4awg Power wire, Stinger ANL fuse holder , twisted pair interconnects, and other various accessories.

Funny I was just out to see a buddy of mine who owns a Car stereo place I'll have to get pictures of his Bus that he is getting ready for the World DB Drags. He wants to set the world record for DB's coming from a vehicle. It was really kind of scary he has (25) 1000 watt Alpine amps and plans on putting in 100 JL-Audio dual voice coil 12's in it. He actually put 2.5" thick bullet proof windows in the whole thing in the hope that it wont bust them out. (I think it still will). Next time I stop in the shop I will take pictures and post them. He said that when it is all said and done he will have about 180,000 put into the bus. :D

In my Dodge Ram extended cab pickup truck...

Sony CDX-828 10 disc changer feeding a

Sony CDX-C5850 head unit

front head unit preouts feed

BBE-264 feeds

Sony XE-90MK2 Graphic EQ w/xover

EQ front outs feed

Precision Power PC4400 power amp inputs 1 and 2 feeds

JL VR600CS 6 inch component speakers mounted in doors.

EQ sub outs feed

Precision Power PC4400 power amp inputs 3 and 4 which are bridged and feeds

2 Rockford Fosgate 8 inch Punch XLC subwoofers mounted in cabinets under the rear seat.

rear head unit preouts feed

Alesis Nanoverb feeds

Urban Audio Works UAW-X3 xover to get just the midrange feeds

Radio Shack XL-110 power amp feeds

stock rear speakers.

Also a Radio Shack DC to AC converter to provide power for the BBE unit and the Alesis Nanoverb. I also have a delay relay on the power amp rem leads to avoid popping that is caused by the warm up time of the DC to AC converter. I did run a set of speaker leads through a relay's released state contacts to a small speaker so the chirps from the head unit can be heard when the truck is shut off. The relay is operated via the head units rem lead. This relay also controls power for the rest of the system, either via rem leads or a heavy duty relay that supplies the actual power to the DC to AC converter. All rem leads have their own switch and can be turned off individually for shooting trouble in the system. I also have an external cooling fan for the Precision Power power amp that is operated by one of these switches. These switches are small toggle switches mounded in a jewelery bracelet box which has to be opened to expose them.

Between the subs under the rear seat is where the disc changer resides. Under the drivers seat is the Radio Shack power amp. Under the middle seat is the Precision Power power amp. Under the passenger seat is the Urban Audio Works xover. The head unit and graphic eq reside in the dash where the stock radio was. The Alesis reside in the dash where the cup holders used to be, and the BBE lives where the ash tray was. The power system is enclosed in a box mounted on the transmission hump.
