I may be nuts here, but I've been thinking about updating my "Upcoming Releases to buy" list and i have NOTHING ON IT. The last couple of months have been great with Godfather, Simpsons, Almost Famous Bootleg, Phantom Menace, etc. What other big-name titles are on the immediate horizon? Are we in a lull here?

I believe the Superbit version of The Patriot has been indefinitely postponed. If you learn of a date for this title, please let me know because I would like to get it.

Those are not bad titles mentioned here, but in the way of big blockbuster titles what is coming out? In my opinion not much. It seems the studios are leaning to having big fall releases so they are fresh in the minds of holiday shoppers. The rest of the year their is a lot of stuff released not worth the aluminum it is pressed on.

DVD'ing is no longer like it was in the early days where we could speculate when/if title X would be released. Now it is pretty much a given that any title that can make a few bucks for the studio will be released.

For the blockbuster category, the only titles that I am really concerned about are:

Star Wars Trilogy SE (yes that's SE)have originals on LD

    Indy Trilogy

    Back to the Future Trilogy

Now that DVDs are readily available to rent, I am losing interest in purchasing many titles. The magic of DD5.1/dts 5.1 and high resolution picture is wearing off. I need some of these titles to get me excited again.

When examining my collection the other day. I came to the realization that I probably am not going to watch many of the titles again. After buying a house that adds many other things to the to do list. Maybe it was a mistake amassing a collection of 200+ titles.

[rant]The other thing is how many great movies have been released in the last couple of years. Maybe I am losing interest in movies. Who can blame me? After recently enduring Planet of the Apes (the suck ass edition) and Ron "How can I f-up a classic" Howard's Grinch. When two decent directors release crap special effects/makeup pieces of steaming dog doo whats left to hope for? [/rant]

Don't get me wrong. I like action special effect driven movies if they have a strong story around them but lately all of the money is covering the effects and hardly any effort is put into the story.

Something has to happen soon to get me excited about HT again. Hopefully Lucas will redeem himself with EP2 and Peter Jackson will put himself on the map with LOTR.

I'm with Jack. I'm really losing my taste for much, but not all, of what Hollywood has to offer. Despite all the "big" titles that have recently come out, I've purchased mainly catalogue and Criterion titles. For instance, I just pre-ordered Heart of Glass and The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser - they'll ship with Criterion's Children of Paradise. I'm very much looking forward to getting these. Of course, I'll also be picking up the SEs of M*A*S*H, Mad Max, and The Adventures of Buckeroo Banzai! [IMG]

Ok, I'll complain again. [IMG] I mentioned this last September, I think. The titles just aren't there any more. I was picking up 5 - 8 new releases a month, but after TPM came out, I had 6 more the next 2-1/2 months.
Ok, there is no accounting for tastes, and some of mine are strange, but I still feel that the quantity of new new releases has dropped. Ok, maybe I am just in a slump, but it still sucks!

January is not too bad - Buckarro Banzai and Mash... Feb has just picked up with Punchline, Ghost World and Larry Sanders season 1... as for March, nothing yet.

By the way, I have the Elephant Man R1 on dvd... odd thing about the disc though is that there are no chapter selections. Still, picture is good and so is the 30 minute documenatry.
