Last night's episode (8/12/01) was strange for me because I had been to Las Vegas for the 4th of July and I also stayed at the Paris (where the Fisher Brothers and Brenda stayed), and it was eerie to see blackjack tables that I probably left quite a few chips on myself. It was like getting just another taste of Las Vegas.
So what did we get this week:
Ruth almost confronts David on his sexual orientation (loved how she expressed her distaste for it by hosing down David's chat-room buddy coming out of David's door). She also takes lessons in arranging flowers and learns to let go upstairs and let her creative side flow through. This is after Nikolai tells her that her arrangements are funeral-like, and not so cheery, he wants her to work the register and the books, and she hate that option (having had to do the books while her husband was alive). I like it that Ruth takes control of her shortcomings, goes to class, and develops the skills she needs to do a job. I think that shows a lot about Ruth's character.
Does anyone else see some scary resemblances between Mary Gross (the flower arrangement instructor) and Rachel Griffeths (Brenda)? They could play sisters.
Claire is truly in love with Gabe, who OD'd on speed and heroin, and wound up in a hospital in Barstow. She gets the cold shoulder (and gets cussed out by the mother), but winds up sleeping in her car overnight, comes back to the hospital, brings Gabe a McOmelette, and finally confesses to Gabe that she loves him, and he does the same. (Though why she'd want to be with a suicidal guy is beyond me).
David's speech at the funeral home director's meeting in Las Vegas was spot on (talking about how Kroners is singlehandedly trying to drive the small independent funeral home out of business) and it appears he's grown a set of nads. Nathan's reactions to David always appear genuine when David somehow steps outside of himself and is able to make his point.
Nathan confronts Gilardi (Kroners) and tells him that they know that Kroners set the fire across the street.
Kroners took total credit of a facial reconstruction job that Frederico did while he was moonlighting a few weeks ago. Nathan said Frederico was going to be pissed off.
Nathan and Brenda get a surprise visit from Billy at the Paris casino, Billy's totally acting psycho (Nate had to come to the rescue and push Billy off of Brenda) and Brenda finally is seeing the scary person that her parents have had to deal with all these years.
David gets taken to a strip club by some new fans of his after his scrathing speech on Kroners. His new fans (other funeral home directors from Arizona) pay a dancer to give David a lapdance, and he got absolutely no "Schwing!" from the experience, so she cut the dance off early, and the new fans wondered why, and she tells them he's gay. Doh! I'm sure that news will travel all over the west coast among the industry (but he is from LA, so they may cut him some slack).
Afterwards, David is feeling drunk and horny, check out the seedy flyers that visitors get while in Vegas, and the flyers have phone numbers for both flavors of sexual delights (Brenda laughs at the exploding genital areas of most of the females in their photos in the ads). David calls up a male escort, and gets busted while "in the act rather vigorously" by the police, and ends up spending the night in jail. He gets one phone call, and winds up calling Keith, his former lover who's also a cop, and Keith pulled some strings and got David's arrest thrown out (luckily for him), but tells David that he needs help and that they are through.
Back in LA, Brenda and Nathan are looking at photos of their Vegas trip, and they come across 2 photos taken of them sleeping, which freaks out Brenda (it's implied that Billy snuck in and took the photos in Las Vegas). Nathan has to hold Brenda to calm her down. (This sets the table for the season ender next week).
Frederico has a pregnant wife with a bit of hypertension as she's nearing the end of her pregnancy. As fate would have it, Frederico also has the unpleasant task of preparing a 3 week old infant who died of SIDS, and he's fighting the fears of his own baby not being "okay". He perseveres and prepares the baby and show considerable restraint when the grieving couple ask him if he has children, and he only tells them of his 4 year old, and not the child that will be born soon. Frederico's wife doesn't feel well (this is after she continues to be out and about when she was supposed to be bedridden and resting) has to go to the hospital, and they perform a C-section, the child comes out but doesn't cry for a good 2 minute long stretch, all the while Frederico is thinking the worst, but the doctor tells him that they are just warming up the baby, and finally the baby lets out a joyful cry, and Frederico and his wife are relieved.
    Bright washout to credits.

Yes, there was a review post for episode 10; it just didn't feature the episode title:

According to the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, SFU has a bigger audience in its first season than The Sopranos did. Here's a link to the story on their website.

I posted this on the Yahoo Club for SFU earlier.
I used to be a supervisor of a housekeeping dept. in a hospital. We had to help clean the morgue after a body was examined. I have seen a lot of dead bodies. I even saw a man missing half of his head. The only time I would not help out was when a baby was brought down. After seeing last night's episode, I'm glad I never did see a dead baby in the morgue.

I laughed out loud twice during this episode: first when Ruth hosed down David's one-night-stand, and then when Nikolai said to Robby (is that his name?), in his usual thick Russian accent "Do you have diploma from flower school??" when he insisted that he should do the arrangements.
Billy was creepy as hell, I wonder what will happen to him.
Poor David really needs to get a grip. Picking up the hooker was a new low for him. I almost wished Keith wouldn't have helped him out. Hopefully he'll do something about it.
Great episode, I wish the season wouldn't be over next week...
Oh, and the flower class instructor looked a lot like Brenda, yes. Weird choice of actress.

Another great episode! Billy is frightening and it looks like he's going to be even worse next week. I hope David gets his shit together and I hope Claire is not going to get hurt.
