It's been quite a while since the JP3 and PH messup. Are any of the companies involved doing any product recalls or anything otherwise? Has anyone read or heard anything new on that? Onkyo still has a stale press re;ease on their site, nothing new!

Updated firmware is available for downloading for at least some of the high end Onkyo receivers.

New firmware is also available for Tag McLaren's pre/pro.

Outlaw's newsletter announced that they delayed releasing their new pre/pro so they could include the fixes.

I haven't heard anything about any recalls from any company

    (I have a Marantz pre/pro).

    grumble.

    Razvan,

Selden wrote that an update is available for higher end receivers. Is there such an update available for the 898?

    Ted,

Fiasco being that on some Onkyos and other brand of receivers, there were constant Audio dropouts while trying to watch Pearl Harbor and Jurassic Park-III in Dolby Digital.

Universal because of their money grabbing greed, has implemented a copy protection scheme in the code area for DD-EX that is causing DD-EX flag recognition software problems with some DVDs on some pre-pros and receivers.

This isn't limited to Universal. Discs from Disney ("Pearl Harbor") and Anchor Bay ("The Stunt Man" and "The Beastmaster") are also affected.

Nick - sorry for the confusion. Is your Onkyo software upgradeable?

Selden - where can the new firmware be downloaded from?

The only receivers upgradeable are most likely the ones equipped with a RS232 connection (or similar).

I don't think the 797 has one, but I could be mistaken.

    Hello,

According to Onkyo the only two receivers that are firmware upgradeable are the 989 and the Integra 9.1. The other Integra receivers that have a RS232 port are for control only and cannot be used to upgrade the software.

I hope I'm wrong but this information does come from Onkyo and is supported in their user manuals.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

    Guys,

Thanks for responding so adequate. But what I really meant is, how are they going to cope with all the Onkyo's in the field that are NOT upgradable in this way??

I don't think Onkyo is going to do anything. Really, it's a software issue. It's my take that the software makers will have to alter the encoding appropriatly.

    Great.

Well I have an Onkyo595 on order only because the store said they will keep replacing it until I get lucky and end up with one that works fine. Supposedly the 696 doesn't have this issue but that is like $300 more.

If I can't get one that works then I start all over again with a reciever search. That would not be good.

I don't really know that Onkyo should go replacing any of their products because of an error on the part of the producers of two DVD's. It isn't Onkyo or Dolby's fault that these studios tried to insert some wierd form of copy-protection into those bitstreams that causes dropouts. If anything, you should be asking for replacement copies of JP3 and Pearl Harbor from their respective studios.

But... both of these discs have excellent DTS tracks, so what's the problem?

I just want a little clarification here. I heard about the PH and JP3 dvds, but someone here mentions that there are some other disks too. Has this been confirmed? and if so, is it because of the same reason? ... improper use of the DD-EX flag for copywrite info?

Again, another thing is that a lot of non region 1 dvd's DON'T have DTS! It seems you guys are a lot better off again. Damn!
