So the girl at the rental counter suggested Speedway Junkie. Glad she did. (1 Viewer)

I picked up a variety of things at our awesome video store(TLA, if you're from Philly). One of them was a suggestion by the girl at the counter.

Speedway Junkie with Jesse Bradford and Jonathan Taylor Thomas(go figure).

It was a freebie, for unrelated reasons, so I watched it.

It's Pretty Good! Without giving anything away, the characters are mostly homeless or parentless teens hustling in Las Vegas. Naturally, for the sake of making money, some of the characters are less than particular about who they'll "date", including gender.

It may be "uncomfortable" for some audiences, I suppose. I thought it was exceptional, in it's low-key presentation of issues. There is NO sex shown, only implied, and frankly this liberates this film from the stigma of being pornographic or at least prurient.

It reminded me quite a bit of Y TU Mama Tambien for it's frank and at least reasonably believeable portayals of situations and characters. The subject material is different, to say the least, but both films fall squarely in the "art film" genre.

Really good acting from Bradford and the actor who plays his friend. Also, Darryl Hannah(!) is great here. Gus Van Sant Exec Produces.

So, score one for the rental girl. I recommend you rent this movie, if you're interested in classic themes shown in different ways.

Tonight, I start the Cowboy Bebop series on DVD, which I also picked up at the same time. Gotta Love TLA.
