some guys at work who are 'in the know' are saying that the XBOX wont survive much past Christmas. This is the first I've heard that they wont be around much longer. Is this true? Apparently they are saying that MS is losing $250 per system sold. Should I be looking at returning my XBOX and getting a PS2 now? This all seems strange with XBOX live coming online in a month or so. Thoughts??

    They're probably just PS2 fanboys.

Find out their source. Or whether it's purely conjecture on their part. Xbox sales may not have met predictions but it's still going strong. And while it is known that Microsoft loses money on each console it's not to that extreme. I've heard $100 per unit thrown around, but that was in the beginning so one has to assume some economies of scale have kicked in as the volume has increased.
And consider this. Xbox Live has not even launched, and there are a lot of people looking forward to that. And there are some great 2nd generation titles coming next year (Halo 2 being the most significant) that will basically assure another year's life out of the Big Box. I'm confident it's going to stay in the game for a while.

The only thing I would say is that if you bought your Xbox in the last 30 days to try to return it to get the one with JGRF and Sega GT.

Bummer, mine was bought on August 30th. No exchange for me. Oh, well. At least now we should see more than a few cheaper copies of JGRF and Sega GT around.

Microsoft is planning on taking up to 2-4 billion in losses on the XBox. It's part of their plan. They hope to make most of it back on software after the first couple of years, and on the XBox 2 which will benefit from XBox 1 market share momentum.

XBox isn't going anywhere any time soon.

For what it's worth, analysts are predicting the Xbox to outsell even the PS2 this holiday season. I don't know if that will happen, but it is conceivable considering that many people who want a PS2 already have one.

Hey thanks guys, that's more or less what I've been thinking as well.
Jay, do you know if the XBOX bundle will be coming out in Canada as well? What will the pricing be on it?
When I bought mine I got it at Superstore with a $30 coupon (first tuesday of the month), plus $60 of PC Points and a mailin coupon for the Remote control. If I can get a similar deal on the new bundle I'd do it for sure. But that $90 off and a free DVD remote was the main reason I bought the thing.
Joel, hey I didn't know you were an XBOXER as well, we'll have to get together for some football when the live becomes a reality, what's the best football game for the XBOX?? btw you might notice that I've picked up some REAL wide receivers and wont be a TOTAL pushover this week in Fantasy ball. But YOU are the #1 team in the league and my stud RB is on a bye this week, so I'm not promising anything!! [IMG]
    Thanks again guys.

JamesH, you could've made your point without the mean-spirited sarcasm.

JamesH, you said analysts were predicting the XBox to be the biggest seller - that report is just a simple online poll.
The analyst reports I've read say otherwise - that the PS2 will be the strong seller. I'll dig up some links.
As stated above - it's a fact that the PS2 is outselling the GC & Xbox by quite a large margin. Xbox sales would have to really jump to outsell the PS2. I think the new bundle will help though, it's a really good deal.

The link said the question was "What console gaming system do you plan to buy in the coming year?" Not what console do you plan to buy this holiday season. There is a big difference.

Well, I am Canadian, so that $250 converted to US$ would be $157. Probably still high, but just for point of reference.
Just so you don't think my friends and I are NUTS!! [IMG] [IMG]
