Last night, while watching the Lakers and Trailblazers, I got my first look at a couple of new NBA rules, and here's my impression:
1. 8 second rule - I don't like this as it seems like too little time to get the ball across half court. 10 seconds seemed fine to me, maybe I'll change my opinion later, though.
2. 3-second Illegal Defense - this rule seems to be arbitrarily called, I'm not sure I completely understand it. You're allowed to play zone, but not in the key?
Overall it didn't seem to affect the Lakers too much (I'm in L.A.). But both teams complained about when rule #2 was called (it was called a couple of times on both teams).

Well let's face it. We are supposed to have Offensive 3 In the key but it never gets called. Every body gets away with this especially shaq. I don't see them calling the Defensive 3 Second Illegal Defense, but who knows I could be wrong. There is one thing I know as much as I hate the lakers there is absolutely no team that can stop them. Which really sucks. GO SONICS!!

Brett,
Apparently the calling of the defensive 3 seconds is very sporadic. One preseason game they were reported as being called 12 times. Another one didn't have any. Yesterday's game had 5-6 that I saw, maybe another couple when i wasn't watching.

The only thing I wish that would happen is
that the referees swallow the whistle.
My god, for a time I was able to switch from
the World Series game back to the Knicks/Wizards
game and not miss a thing.

It's still only 2 days into the season, so it's a bit too early to say if the zones are working out, same with the rest of the rule changes.
I like the zone rules, since it does away with the illegal defense. As for the 3 seconds illegal D, I think refs will call it more consistently as the year progresses. Again, you are not illegal if you are within arms length of an opposing player, unless in the paint. Nice to see that refs were calling the Lakers as they camped out in the paint.
As for the 8 second rule, I like it. Allows teams to trap on the inbounds pass, causing the player with the ball to "hurry-up" and commit errors, burn a timeout, or cause I turnover.
And any team who tries to run a zone against my local boys, the Bucks, is insane.

Jason,
The refs called it more frequently on the Blazers I believe. I think I saw 3 or 4 on them and 2 on the Lakers. I'm sure that's a trade off the Lakers would love since there are free throws involved with each violation (so long as Shaq doesn't shoot them).

Carlo,
Yeah, both teams were called for the 3-seconds a few times, but I mentioned the Lakers because Phil Jackson had a fit on one of the calls. He started hollering at a ref from his seat.
Oh, and I hope the Bucks FINALLY beat the Nuggets at the Pepsi center tonight. They are 5-25 all time in Denver. Wow. Tip-off in 40 minutes.
