Is it just me or was this front to back one of the funniest SNLs in ages? McCain sings Streisand, The Lifetime Movie, The Steely Dan pumpkins, McCain as John Ashcroft in probably the best Hardball with Chris Matthews sketch to date...

Even The White Stripes were more on their game than they have been for previous live TV appearances.

    Regards,

I thought McCain was very funny, and I didn't expect much from this episode. I'm glad to see he took some changes.

I was surprised at McCain's sense of humor. I guess you always see these guys with their guard up in political mode and don't get to see their regular side.

Who the hell are the White Stripes?

It was one of the best in a long time. I loved the Lifetime skit. McCaine was good, but he was stiff in his reaction to what was going on in the skits, something that could have easily been improved upon.

Some of my favorite SNLs have been shows where they stepped up and wrote funny sketches around a non-actor/comedian host. The Wayne Gretzky and Chris Evert episodes from the 80s were good examples. The Michael Jordan and Derek Jeter ones had their moments, too. There have been some pretty bad ones as well, but the potential for a train wreck is part of what makes those shows interesting.

I too really enjoyed this episode. The Hardball sketch was one of the best sketches of this season so far IMHO; seeing McCain as Ashcroft was priceless.

Definately the best episode this season. John McCain was surprisingly very good, stayed in character quite well, and I didn't catch him reading the cue cards as much as I thought I would.

And the White Stripes were great!

well during rehearsals, there usually isn't an audience...
snl does have a dress rehearsal at 8:00pm or so the night of the live performance, so that would've probably been the only time they could've noticed that he was paying too much attention to the audience. but i don't think it hurt his performance too much...
mccain sings streisand was probably my favorite skit, as well as hardball and top o' the morning:
"top o' the mornin' to ya, i'm patrick fitzwilliam."
    "and i'm william fitzpatrick."
"and we've heard the jokes, so save it!"
    "save it!" [IMG]
    more thoughts:
-i thought the lifetime skit was okay, perhaps a bit too long.
-i really like rachel dratch (sheldon) in wake up wakefield, mccain was okay as the art teacher or whoever he was, i don't really care much for maya rudolph's character, but she doesn't get on my nerves.
    - the ambiguously gay duo cartoon was pretty good, but the weakest of all that i've seen...not as many laughs as the other ones.
    - meet the press was pretty good, but almost got to the point of being annoying.
    - weekend update: tina fey seemed to be pissed off during the entire report (good and bad), jimmy fallon was alright, and the tim calhoun thing was great at first but i think it went on a bit too long.
    - i still don't get the point of "my big thick novel" by jack handey, but perhaps the point is to have no point.
    - i'm not too keen on watching the musical guests, whoever they may be, thus i usually change the channel to espn or something. i did that for the first set, but stuck around for the second...nice job. i like the "quieter" music better, like bruce springsteen did with his second set two weeks before.
most memorable snl since the 2000 election season.

What were the names of the songs that the White Stripes sang? I really liked the second song just don't know the name.

    Thanks.

No Brian Fellows in this episode. [IMG]
I also found McCain surprisingly funny. Not a great episode, but certainly worth watching.
    I love Amy Poehler!
