Looked like a zipper to me, Like "my lips are sealed"
The characters are colon/dash/exclaimation mark

So, my guess is zipper, but I certainly can't say I know for sure.

It's exactly that; "Foot-in-Mouth". If you right click in the IM window, then go to Insert> Smiley. It will tell you what each one means.
