A few notes here relating to the coming Blu-ray release: 1. This release can be called A 40th Anniversary Release Special Edition coming 40 years after the film’s theatrical release (for the one week or so it was in theaters) on October 1st, 1979. (Blu-ray release date is set for September 24th, 2019). 2. On a more somber note, it is also the ten year marker of Patrick Swayze’s passing (September 14, 2009). Patrick of course played bad boy skater Ace Johnson in his introductory feature role. 3. This film was advertised as “The Greatest Story Ever Rolled” which of course lead to some people wondering what the suits at Rastar & Columbia were rolling (and smoking) when they green lighted this film. 4. Disco as a phenomenon was still hitting the charts but clearly starting to go downhill and fade away which was a big contributor to the film’s failure at the box office. Some were hoping though that this movie, if a hit, would re-energize the disco phenomenon. That clearly did not happen. 5. Of the three roller skating themed films of that time period (the other two being Roller Boogie (1979) and Xanadu (1980), Skatetown USA (1979) is generally considered to be the snazziest & most fun film of the three.
