Another terrific episode! Nate's humanity shows as the show progresses.
I find it refreshing that HBO is not as constrained in content and can show real people living real lives and doing real things.
Nate and Brenda going at it would have never made it on network TV (having Billy walk in on them and making the comments of their position was hilarious).
Nate's reaction to catching David with a gay-porno tape in his VCR was classic! "Hey Dave, I watch porn, toooo!" Hahaha!
Nate doing the legwork investigating what PRC Kovitch wanted for a funeral was a nice touch. Nate is just more in touch with what people need than David is.
The politics of church was touched upon with the recruitment of a new priest at St. Bart's.
Mom going to work at the floral shop, and crying from the happy ocassions that flowers are being sold for (vs. funerals) was a nice touch.
Dinner with Mom's boyfriend, Nate, Brenda, and Claire was funny in that the imagination of Nate and Claire ran wild with visions of mom and boyfriend getting all horny on each other.
Nice "Scanner's" touch for the math teacher's head exploding.

Billy busts with another great movie reference: "BRING OUT YOUR DEAD!"
Too funny!
I also enjoyed all the things the kids were imagining at the dinner table about mom and her new boyfriend. "I can't get enough of his c---!"
I feel sorry for poor Nate. It is obvious to me that Billy deliberately lost it to coincide with their trip. My husband disagreed with me and thought that Nate, for once, was being insensitive since he didn't seem to understand about Billy and his sickness. I was Nate's side though and definitely feel that Brenda was being manipulated by her jealous brother.
This is such a good show.
The funny thing is my husband knows the guy that played the dead soldier (Victor). They used to play baseball together. He was laughing at the description of how the character played baseball because it was accurate to the kid who played him.

quote: It is obvious to me that Billy deliberately lost it to coincide with their trip. [/quote] You're right, Jodee, and the script goes out of its way to let the audience know that it's no coincidence. Brenda says that he's gone off his meds, and it hasn't happened for along time. Even she knows that Billy pulled this stunt deliberately, but there's no way she can leave him alone.
Great episode. Lauren Ambrose and Frances Conroy look more and more like mother and daughter as the series progresses. It's spooky.

Great episode.
I too agree that Billy is trying to prevent Brenda and Nate from getting closer. Brenda and Nate happily kissed each other when Nate was leaving after Billy burst in on them. The camera changed to Billy as they kissed and you could see the look in Billy's face... he was realizing just how close those two are getting and his jealousy provoked the meds incident.
Also, maybe I missed it, but is this the first episode that the father did not appear to anyone?

I've given up on trying to anticipate plot/character twists since the show is written like a soap on steroids.
While Alan Ball has the overall vision, every segment is written by a different writer and shot w/ a different director. I gotta say it's a lot more coherent than a typical Hollywood, dumb-down, writers' committee-script.
That said...
Nate's growing compassion and desire to make things right is touching, but I fear it may come to bite him in the a$$ sometime.
Brenda also is looking a lot more stable, given how she had to grow up. Remember the earlier segments when people were calling her a ditzo-psycho in-waiting?
David's repression seems bound to burst out down the road, who knows how. I can relate to his Episcopal church position, having grown up in such a church. So I think he's more of a traditionalist, in voting down the activist assistant deacon/priest, rather than some gay/closet subplot.

I was bummed to see that the sister blew off her college test. I suspect she could have ace'ed them? Missed the father in this show, and nice to see the mother come out of her shell as it were. She looks like a different person. It is a little hard for me to see her boyfriend as old enough for her as he used to play on St. Elsewhere.

Hey, Ed Begley Jr. (the boyfriend) was on BattleStar Galactica as well :)
I'm interested in Freddy talking to the loser with the big funeral company. I like that character and I hope he'll play a bigger role in the show.
Think we'll see the return of David's man, or are they over?

Umm-- according to IMDB:
Ed Begley Jr, -- Born 9/16/49
Frances Conroy -- Born 11/13/53
He is 4 years older than her.

That reminds me of North by Northwest. The one thing that always bothered me was that Cary Grant's mother looked too young. I just looked it up on IMDB and she was 10 months YOUNGER than he was!
I guess in Hollywood if you're a female over the age of 40 you're an elderly matron
