If we're free to discuss unrated DVD's of a violent nature, I hope we can discuss sexual ones as well. Especially one of the strangest and oddly compelling adult films of recent years.
There are so many talented people from the non-adult sector of Hollywood that worked on this film - writer Jerry Stahl (PERMANENT MIDNIGHT), director Stephen Sayadian (DR. CALIGARI), actress Michelle Bauer (under Pia Snow pseudonym), and musician Mitch Froom - and it would be really illuminating to hear about their experience. In a sense, CAFE FLESH is not just a porn film, but one of the last examples of the better genre films of the '70's: filmmakers left to their own devices just as long as they provide certain scenes and elements.
Meanwhile, while the package claims to be "digitally mastered," the picture on this DVD looks like another banged-up print chained to video. A legit classic like this deserves a true digital spruce job. I do not recall if the film is a true 1.33 presentation, or meant to be seen at 1.85, but an anamorphic transfer in the case of the latter would be in order. And the original trailer, missing from the current DVD, should be added.
