Yes, I'm sure it is expensive to get the clearances, but what I'm saying is that these sets sell so well, that even if the clearances are expensive to get, I don't think that would be what keeps the Simpsons sets bogged down. I think that the milking of sales is more likely. Fox would probably shave off a few catalog tites for the year instead of holding up a guaranteed seller like the Simpsons if the budget was a problem.

Maybe this is a little farfetched, but if one of the singers (especially someone like Michael Jackson) asks for a percentage of the profits, that could be a deal breaker as well. But hopefully this date will stick and we won't have to wait until 2004 until Season 4. :)

It is true that they don't show earlier episodes that much anymore, but they do pop up from time to time
Consider yourself lucky if you're still seeing any episodes from this series' golden years in syndication anymore. In my neck of the woods (DC/VA/MD), the Fox affiliates never let anything earlier than maybe 1997 get on the air anymore. Plus they show the same lackluster episodes over and over again, it seems (Bart's vision at the Indian casino where Lisa is president, Lisa camps out in a tree, Connie Appleseed, etc.).

I've always suspected this had something to do with the release of the DVDs. I'm just glad the boxed sets are starting to get into the really good stuff now.

I think this is what it is. Sure sales are great, but we don't know what their estimates/expectations are. And if it was music I think there'd be some official leak, at least, to let us know.

Thanks for the info, Patrick. I love how FOX keeps including Butterfinger commercials featuring the characters. I never knew the Simpsons were in Toyota ads. Another nice addition to the set. Looking forward to it (as usual).

Steve, the spec list I saw for the UK Futurama Season 3 set that listed the Table Read listed it as an "Easter egg." So, it wouldn't surprise me if it's also an Easter egg on the Simpsons S3 set.

There's a customer review on amazon.com that gives what could be an additional reason for the long wait:

As for the delays, when I spoke to writer Mike Reiss, he said that they had to find a new company to master the DVDs. They were upset at defects (which people have complained about) and made this one better by using a different company, which caused delays. So just sit tight. It'll get better.
Mike Reiss is one of the original writer/producers (he used to be Al Jean's writing partner, and is still there as a part-time consultant), so if he did say that, he would seem be a pretty reliable source on this.

Amazon.com has Simpsons Season 3 as to be released on July 30, 2003 but Buy.com has Simpsons Season 3 as being released on August 26, 2003.

Amazon.com probably has the wrong date listed. Amazon.com is known for listing wrong release dates on certain DVD's. It does seem strange because I believe that Amazon.com listed Simpsons Season 3 release date as August 26, 2003 not long ago. Maybe FOX changed the release date recently?

TALKING SOFTBALL
We're talkin' softball
from Maine to San Diego,
we're talkin' softball,
Mattingly and Canseco,
Ken Griffey's grotesquely swollen jaw,
Steve Sax and his run-in with the law,
we're talkin' Homer,
Ozzie and the Straw

Classic episode!

Thanks for the tip about the table-read on FUTURAMA S3, I'd missed that. It runs 35 minutes but the sound quality isn't great.
A few years back, THE SIMPSONS cast did some staged readings in London and Edinburgh. I don't know whether they were filmed, but if they were, it'd be a GREAT extra for one of the DVD sets, don't you think ?

-- Bonus features on The Simpsons: The Complete Third Season DVD Box Set will include, for the first time, commentary from members of the voice cast. "I think we set a record for the number of commentary participants," writes Nancy. "In 'Lisa The Greek' there are ten of us!"

This is from a news update on www.toonzone.net . I don't think this has been posted here before, but I'm glad their letting the VA's in on the commentaries to liven them up a bit :).
