I’m updating my HDTV home theatre system to digital surround. It’s my first post, and I appreciate comments/ideas. I have two high current Denon amps driving two pairs of Bose 901s for front/back, a decent powered subwoofer, plus smallish speakers for center, etc. - plenty of sound for one room.

I believe that I just need accurate decoding, i.e. a receiver w/ preouts to get 6 or more discrete digital channels, and that a “real” prepro like an Outlaw would add little of discernable value for my needs. Also, with 2 year obsolescence, doesn’t a “throw-away” digital decoder/receiver make sense, just like w/ motherboards in PCs? Won’t all digital audio (and home theater) be based on PC technology soon enough anyway?

So why not something like a low end Pioneer, e.g. VSXD912K, with preouts & a simple MCACC?
Will Auto MCACC function through preouts or should I fuggitabout MCACC?

    Thanks Geno,
for advising of that extremely economical decoder. I found out that auto speaker setup does seem to work w/ preamp outputs - definitely for Yamaha, probably for Pioneer. Also, I'll be adding a few smaller speakers in addition to my separates hence I need the amp, need a radio, and want the latest in decoder capability, so I ordered a VSX-D912K.

I'll report back on my level of satisfaction.

10.18.03 912K up & running with my separates. It's exactly what I'd hoped. Auto setup works great w/ separates and a powered sub. Move a speaker, or alter sep amp levels? just rerun auto setup - 2 mins done!

    Regards Ken
