Matt..Just buy it [IMG]. If you loved the first one you will absolutely love this one. I just picked it up today and played it for about an hour or so ( I have to work soon). It is extremely creepy.
Imagine the original Silent Hill...good. Now think back to when you were playing it and kept thinking "Man, I can only imagine what they are gonna do with a sequel!" Well they did it. The graphics are spectacular, the sound will creep you out. The story seems really interesting. The controls are much improved from the first one too. Harry always seemed very stiff to me and it made combat somewhat cumbersome. James on the other hand is a smooth controlling fool, combat is much more pleasureable. The enemy design is above and beyond anything seen in the first one. Allot more hellraiser-ish. When one of the patient demons falls to ground and starts scurrying around like an insect it'll give you the willies.
Kudos to Konami for an excellent game and a wonderful sequel so far to the classic Silent Hill. HIGHLY recommended!!

Just got this today, right before work. I didn't get a chance to play it, though. I can't wait to try it out late tonight (when the atmosphere is right.)

I heard that SH2 is like the original, with better graphics, a little less creepy, and the ending makes sense. When you beat the game, can you confirm or deny this for me? I want to get this game no matter what, but I want to be sure I know what I'm getting into.

Bought it today, and I've played it for about an hour. So far, its much like the 1st, but very souped up for the PS2. And it is making my skin at times...
    So far, extremely cool!!! [IMG]

I picked it up and have been playing for an hour now. Very spooky so far. Right now I'm in the apartment complex without a flashlight. My own shadow caught me by surprise when I first saw it. So far it's much like the first one.

The game is very similar to the first one. All the conventions of the Silent Hill series are there. The fog, the flashlight..so forth so on. The graphics have been bumped up a HUGE amount!! Everything is gorgeus.
There are some differences though. The combat like I mentioned earlier feels quite a bit smooter than the first Silent Hill. The enemy designs are greatly improved as well. I found some of the enemies in the first Silent to be kind of goofy at times (especially the flying creatures in town). The enemies in 2 are like a marily manson video gone horribly wrong. They are disgusting and revolting!!
Of course the best part of the game is the atmosphere. This game is just wierd and creepy from the get go. There is something very poetic yet slightly off-kilter (sp?) seeing James in front of the rest stop thinking to himself abut his wifes letter in the beginning. It just struck me as disturbing.
Again, very recommended to PS2 owners out there! Also for those looking for an alternative to ICO (which frankly just isnt my cup of tea) this is the game for you.

I love this game. By the way, I got my flashlight from one of the rooms in the apartment. I do need help though. Where do I find the third coin? I found the Old Man coin and the serpent, but where's the third one? Anyone know?
Also, the enemies so far have been creepy. There's a lot of investigating and walking in this game. I think a lot more than the first. All I can say is that I love this game. Pick it up....now.

Been playing for about 3 hours now. Definitely a creepy game. Never played the 1st one.
While I find the graphics to be quite good; the lighting effects/realtime shadows with the flashlight are THE BEST I've EVER seen, I was wondering if the "grainy" look to everything is on purpose?
It just doesn't have the "sharp" graphics of the majority of games out there. In fact, a few times last night I would sit there and look at the screen and it reminded me of when you're not quite receiving a cable channel well. You know, the bit of static mixed in with the signal?
I take it that Konami did that on purpose to further enhance the mood of this game?
Anyhoo, I'm really enjoying the game. Currently I'm in the apartment building, nervously hoping I don't run into that..."thing"...I saw from the behind the closet door.
I'm hoping this game is decently long. Already read one of my other fears is true: ICO is short.

Yes Derrick, Konami added tha grain effect on purpose to give it that 16mm quality look (kinda like the blair witch). I personally love the effect as it adds to the mood. Good news for those who dont like the grain effect. Once you have beaten the game through for the first time a new option opens up to remove the noise filter so it will take away the grain effect. That should make those who enjoy high Resolution graphics happy!
Also in case you didn't know if you go into the options menu and then hold down L1 and R1 it will allow you into a secret menu where you can customize the controls even more. This is the same menu where the noise filter option will appear.
I have played past the apartment now (about 4-5 hours in, the game is supposed to be about 15 hours long, longer if you thoroughly explore) and can I say that this game includes a level of fear and horror never presented in a game. This game gives me the same uncomfortable feeling the excorcist gave me. Here are some figures:
Number of enemies Ive killed= at least 25
Number of rooms Ive been in =at least 30
Number of times Ive pooped myself from fear=UNCOUNTABLE!!!!!!
If your just getting to the apartment your in for some real F&%$#ed up stuff and some serious scares. Enjoy!! [IMG]

Silent Hill 2 and ICO seem to have just made the PS2 into a true next gen console. They both have the atmosphere, graphics, and gameplay to back that up.
I played the demo of ICO and I thought the lighting, animation, and the water effects were THE BEST I had ever seen. Now, it looks like SH2 has perfected the visual effects and fog effects, not to mention the atmosphere effects.
No wonder Sony doesn't see MS or Nintendo as threats.

    Yeah, I agree Morgan.
To be honest, I've even been rethinking my XBox preorder. I might cancel it and wait until after Xmas. Don't really need that extra $500 on my Visa right now, ya know? With all the killer PS2 games coming out from now 'till Xmas....do I really NEED the XBox right now? [IMG]

well looks like im trading in the 64 and a few other accessories tomorrow. quick question for you guys.. which do you suggest trading with that so i can get Silent Hill 2.. Midnight Club (like it okay.. haven't played in ages) or Zone of the Enders (never liked the game but loved Metal Gear Solid's demo)? problem is i have to trade that demo with zoe. whats your pick?

Midnight Club. ZOE is not that bad (just too short) and its worth keeping just for the MGS2 demo.
You're trading in your N64? How sad. I never trade my consoles in or any of my games. Just too much nostalgia.

I finally sat down and played my copy of SH2 last night for a couple of hours and I really like it. Right from the get go I was creeped out. Hearing all the sounds in the woods while walking that trail to get to the town was freaking me out. The surround sound in the game is fantastic. [IMG]
So far the game is just as creepy, if not more creepy, than the original Silent Hill. Those walking manequins are freaky. Also, the lighting effects from the flashlight are just plain fantastic. I have never seen lighting like that in a game. Konami has once again successfully created the most uncomfortable atmosphere in a game.
    MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD

I also hope to run into that freak looking thing that I saw while hiding in the closet, that thing was creepy looking, especially when it was doing weird things with the other manequins. I also felt the room with the guy who's face was splattered on the TV was hardcore.
