I went to Best Buy to pick up Shrek and a few other DVDs. I noticed that the Shrek VHS tapes come in a big giant cardboard box. Anybody know why? It didn't look like there were any extra goodies in there, just a tape in an oversized box with a lot of extra room. So wasteful! Why would they do this? Just to take up more shelf space? Or is there some other reason.

And it looked like there wasn't anything but that box to keep the tape in. No big plastic "Disney" case or even a sleave.

Just as long as vhs stays on it's side of the court, I don't care what they do with their cases.

I also looked at the Shrek VHS with curiosity. All I can guess is that the bigger box is simply more visible to potential purchasers.

I believe the larger "Shrek" VHS case was so designed to fit alongside the large clamshell cases used on many children's and family releases. I don't know why it doesn't actually come in a clamshell, but it has roughly the same proportions.
