    Hi all,

I searched the Forum for this, so I'm sorry if it's been brought up already. But, when Shrek is in his house, and the dwarfs come in with Snow White. She states, "No, dead girl off the table"... at least he did in the movies, and in the trailers on the DVD... but they changed the word "GIRL" in the actual DVD release. Any idea why????

What did they change it to? I remember it was still girl on the DVD.

    According to the IMDB:

Shrek: Oh, no. Dead broad OFF the table!

So Dreamworks changed broad to girl for the DVD? Interesting.

EDIT: In the IMDB Alternate Versions Section for Shrek:

Yep. You're right. It was "broad" in the theaters. I guess they're change was pretty slick as I didn't notice it at all.

    Why would they change this?

Perhaps the word "broad" used in this context is not acceptable on tv. Let's face it, broadcast tv is not the most liberal of institutions.

If I'm not mistaken, Shrek, in the film itself (i.e. even on the DVD) says "dead broad off the table!" In most of the extras in which that clip is shown, including the trailers, the line is "dead girl off the table!"

I simply assumed that the line was changed from "girl" to "broad" (not the other way around) for the final theatrical (and DVD) presentation.

Shrek says: "Oh no, dead BROAD off the table!" in the film on both DVDs. For the theatrical trailer, TV spots, and promotional clips, the line was toned down to: "Oh no, dead GIRL off the table!"

This is the same as in What Women Want where the trailers and TV spots have Darcy McGuire saying: "Oh no, I just looked at his crotch." but in the film she says "Oh no, I just looked at his penis."

On my DVD at least, it is "Dead broad..." but the trailers say "Dead girl..."

The DVD uses "Dead broad off the table".

Why they would change the promo is beyond me. In fact it is a bit mis-leading then.

I noticed the change when I saw the film at the theatre. The original trailer said "girl" and the original film and dvd say "broad."

For some stupid reason a lot of "sensitive" people feel that broad is a sexist statement. So to tone down the trailers, TV spots, and promotional clips; Dreamworks changed the word to girl. Less sexist that way.

Again its like the Darcy McGuire character says "crotch" in the trailer, TV spots and promotional clips for What Women Want but the actual film uses the word penis. Less offensive to "sensitive" people that way.

Same thing in evolution. In the trailers the bug is heading towards Orlando Jones' "crotch". In the film its "testicles".

I think that censoring it for the ads was a good idea so that people wouldn't get insulted, but when they go to see the movie, its their choice, so hearing the word shouldn't offend them as much.

Overall, the film still has the word in it and its not a big deal. The ads didn't. Big whoop.

Thats not the only change. Check out your Total Movie April 2001 DVD, if you still have it. The magic mirror says "Technically, its not perfect." In the movie the magic mirror says "Technically, you're not a king."

I have the R4/R2 DVD and it's untouched. "Dead BROAD off the table!"
