We weren't playing Empire, I was working at a semi-rural quad where the closest location playing Empire was 45 minutes away.

So many great gags in this film. My favorite one might be when Rudy is haggling over fifty bucks with a customer, and Luke (Jack Warden) is having a heart attack after the 'test drive'

Rudy: "... I'm telling you, when my boss sees these figures, he going to have a stroke."
Charlie: "What's he trying to pull. Fifty bucks never killed anyone."

Luke bursts into the office, gasping and holding his chest.

    Charlie: "Okay. It's a deal. It's a deal. I"ll sign! I'll sign!"

    - Walter.

The guys say in the commentary track that the film had a limited release to theaters, and Airplane was the big film that got the box office at the time.

Recently watched Used Cars for the first time - truly frickin' hliarious film; I laughed out loud numerous times, which rarely happens with me - even when watching great comedies like this one.

    I was especially amused by:

-Early in the film, when Kurt Russell's character lures a potential customer of the rival car lot (across the street) to his lot - using a 10-dollar bill on a fish-hook, and then successfully sells him a used Piece of [email protected]!$ - which has a bumper that was literally only held together using a piece of chewing gum - LOL. When the sucker drives the car out of the lot & over a large bump in the road, the bumper completely falls off - very funny.

-The extremely cheap paint (that easily washed off/rubbed off) that was used to paint over cars that had previously been used as Taxis, ambulance cars, etc., and the b.s. explanation that the yellow paint & other colors that were seen underneath the cheap paint was "primer" - hilarious.

-Jack Warden playing two twin?! brothers, both of whom were equally dishonest car salesmen - hilarious.

-The car commercial that they filmed to interrupt the football game - side-splittingly funny! LOL

-Also extremely funny was the TV spot (Special Features) where Russel was "promoting" the movie by shilling for an actual used car lot in Mesa, AR. I.e., after seeing the film, I can't think of a person I would trust less to sell me a used car than Russell - ha ha.

You should have heard me laughing in a near empty movie theater back in 1980.:)

I saw commercials for it, but pretty much no one I knew went to see it. They did all go to see Airplane. Used Cars really caught on for me when it appeared on HBO--and it played over and over and over.

    Jim,

It is one of the true comedy classics from that era. Makes me laugh every time.
