"Outstanding film noir ... which presents one of the most disturbed (and disturbing) killers ever to cross the screen." – TV Guide

One of Hollywood's classic hard-boiled thrillers and a favorite of suspense film lovers, this picture marked the first hit pairing of tough guy Alan Ladd, in the role that made him an instant star, and sultry blonde bombshell Veronica Lake.

Adapted from a novel by Graham Greene, This Gun For Hire is the edgy story of love, power and betrayal set in the seamy underworld of the 1940s. Philip Raven (Ladd) is a cold-blooded professional killer who's been double-crossed by his client. Ellen (Lake) is a beautiful nightclub singer who's spying on her corrupt boss. Lt. Michael Crane (Robert Preston) is a dedicated cop who wants Ellen's love and Raven's capture. The tension mounts steadily ... and before the case is wrapped up, someone will pay with his life.

I think you will enjoy this film. Just remember it's a 1942 crime/film noir in which the production code limited it somewhat, but it made a star of Alan Ladd, who was excellent as Raven and it allowed Paramount to team him again with Veronica Lake in future films. Robert Preston has a major role in it as a cop. Also, both, Laird Cregar and Marc Lawrence were great in this film. A first rate film that is only 81 minutes long, but very effective in telling its story.

I hope that bit about color is a mistake. If this is a colorized bastardisation of the film, I'm not buying. This film is of interest for several reasons, one of which is the view of big business as being willing to betray the country.

    Sold!

As soon as I saw Robert Preston's name I was in --- of course, you stating it's a first-rate film helped as well.

    Robin,

Relax, Shout! Factory isn't releasing this in color. It will be in black and white.

So Shout! Factory has now released the following Ladd/Lake films on Blu-ray:

    The Blue Dahlia
    The Glass Key
    This Gun for Hire

I'm expecting some bonus material with an audio commentary based on those other two released titles.

Since I imported The Glass Key and The Blue Dahlia on Blu-ray from abroad, I'll complete this noir trilogy with this domestic Blu-ray of the first Lake-Ladd pairing. Looking forward to unloading my DVD on a willing friend.

Hopefully they will include the LUX RADIO THEATER version of "This Gun For Hire" from 1-25-43 with Alan Ladd.
