I guess I accidentally started this whole clusteryouknowwhat. Not intentional. No idea what I was thinking.

I was going to contribute my opinion, but considering it's already crossed over into posts complaining about how people post complaining about how people post (let's see, did I type that right? Yep.) I think I'll just move on.

Sorry - Sam. Based on the title of this post I thought it was about the practice of posting a link without any descriptive text. My post was never about you or anyone on HTF personally and only expressed my viewpoint on a practice.
As long as we follow forum rules - you can post whatever you wish and I can deal with all posts as I wish.
    It's all good.

No worries. I have bots, searches and triggers that alert me to stuff I am interested in on the web, Reddit, and Twitter and when I find stuff of specific interest I post it here at my home, HTF.. In general those links stand on their own and I don't post any thoughts one way or the other.

    Of course it does.

I was referring to other types of posts and threads in the Movies section.

Let me ask you this. What’s the harm in adding a little context?

There's no harm in it, but it should not be a requirement, where not doing so brings 5 posts chastising you for it.

I have no problem being told how I'm not allowed to talk about politics or personally attack other members, but I'm not going to be told by other members how my posts must be written.

No one is being told. They’re being asked. Big difference.

Edit. Although John said “you have to” but I still interpret it as a request.

Told or asked, my answer to the question posed by the thread is no.

Edit: that came out a bit more harsh than I mean it to be taken...

If people are posting links it's generally "I think this is cool and I think people who are in this thread based on the title will think it's cool too". Consider me saying that any time you see a link I post. I don't have anything to add other than based on the link you'll either be tempted to click or not.

Time, mostly. Plus context switching. If I post a link alone generally I was reading twitter or Reddit and I found something cool there I think HTFers would appreciate. I drop a link and go back to doing what I was doing.

To add to what Sam just said - half the time I do it I'm doing something like waiting in line at Target, surfing on my phone, and I see an article that I quickly drop on HTF before I reach the cashier. If I know the rule states I have to do a mini write-up on it I'm just going to say screw it and put the phone back in my pocket and no one here will see the article.

Would it be nice? Yes. But if the poster doesn't do it just be happy that you got the information, you know?

I would say that if the link points to a subscription site, then a brief summary is warranted.

Otherwise the OP is inviting some expletives

But they don’t stand on their own.
Ok the handful of us who know you might realize that this is what you do.
Others will start seeing this happening and will start posting links
to things that pertain to the discussion but I might be somewhere that won’t allow for that website to open so now I’m out of that information.
So how about simple courtesy to include a blurb about what someone is linking to?
    It’s a discussion web site.
If all anyone ever did was start posting links instead of actually using their words to discuss then it’s just a click through web site not a discussion site.

Why should anyone have to click to something to see what one's thoughts about the topic are?
Just tell me without expecting us to click to another web site.

It takes just as little amount of time to type a few words as it does to copy links and paste them in.

Yeah that’s twitter, just retweet it. If it’s interesting enough drop the info over here too when you have a minute.

Just be happy we got the info?
Really? You say it like you’re doing us all a huge favor.
Why not just wait until you get home and post the info then.

Is that really what your thinking of when you see something online while in line at a store? “Oo this is neat I better post a link to HTF right this second but oh man it takes so long to write up a few words about this so I’ll just copy and paste the link because that’s so much easier and quicker.”

    Losing battle I know.
    Too bad I guess.
