Of course not.
And as for the effects in 2001, I was suprised how well they have held up when I watched the film on DVD last September. It seems Kubrick used the effects so... calmly (for lack of a better word) that there simply doesn't seem to be much there that could be topped by modern CGI. Or it could be that I was just led astray by the overall beauty and magnificence of that film.
