It's been a long time since I've shopped. My basic needs are nothing fancy, Progressive Scan and a front panel joystick are the basic requirements.
I recall that there were some models that would automatically upscale non-anamorphic DVD's to 16x9. This would be a nice feature as I hate switching to the TW2 mode on my Toshiba widescreen.
I don't care about various audio dvd formats etc.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Tom

Very few models auto format/zoom for non-anamorphic DVDs or pillar-box 4:3 titles for 16:9 displays. The JVC models do it. But I prefer a high quality Faroudja-based de-interlacer model though they don't have zooming, but the higher image quality is worth it. Check on EBAY for a Panasonic XP30.
