I wish it was coming to R1...
Paramount has been silent on the subject of releasing this film on DVD for the US market.

I believe that the image on the right is an outer sleeve.

I was just about to buy this DVD, until I realised that it's only available in Pan & Scan (shame on you Paramount ), and according to an Amazon reviewer, it's been sourced from a US version, where some of the dialogue has been altered by over-dubbing to make it more understandable to an American audience (e.g. the names of some UK shops).

No purchase from me. Presumably, even if a widescreen version appeared in R1, it'll still have the altered dialogue.

Just out of interest, where do forum members stand on the issue of over-dubbing? Does the improved understanding mitigate the fact that the dialogue isn't the same as the original theatrical release - but then I suppose you get into the debate of which original theatrical release - UK or US (the latter of which may also have been over-dubbed).

Turning this on its head, I'd find it very distracting to buy a R1 DVD portraying American characters, set in America, where they used British-only words in their dialogue.

Howard,

I remember the overdubbing. The only point that I remember it sticking out, and being "distractingly bad" was when Shirley mentions the make and model of a UK car, they had her re-record the line to say a "Ford Escort."

If there were other lines dubbed, they escaped my notice.

Personally, I wish they would just stick with the original UK dialogue for all regions of Shirley Valentine on DVD.
No one overdubbed certain terms in AB FAB, and that has been a hit over here.

Mark,

Ford Escorts were extremely popular over here - so it's ironic that they had to overdub something else with 'Ford Escort', when they could have used this name in the first place!

The specific dialogue given as an example in the review is 'K-Mart' used instead of UK furniture retailer 'MFI'.
