I watched the PBS special in 1990, when it was first run over five nights during the week in the fall. Shelby was one of the "go to" experts on the show, and made a real impression on me. He's even more well-known as the author of a three volume, 3000 page Civil War history.

IIRC he became the story-telling 'grandfather of America' due to the series.....also the recipient of about 100 marriage proposals from widows of his age group....sad that it took him so long to become famous.
