Born into a show business family – his American aunt was one of the first Shakespearian actresses in the US – British director Michael Anderson went into films in the 1930’s as an actor before going behind the camera. By the end of the 1950’s, he had established himself on both sides of the Atlantic with films like The Dam Busters (1955), Chase a Crooked Shadow (1958) and the Best Picture Oscar winning adaptation of Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days (1956). One of his last films in the decade was an adaptation of the Rearden Conner novel of the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921), Shake Hands with the Devil. Previously released in a pan-and-scan version as part of a 4-film DVD set by Shout Factory, Kino has licensed the movie from MGM (the current rights holder) for its Blu-ray debut.
