I have a 29" philips 4:3 TV. It has 4:3 expand but does not have 16:9 compress. Should I set my dvd player to 16:9 or 4:3, or can the set be adjusted to the squeeze mode? I know how to get into the service menu, but have no clue what's going on in there.

According to the philips web site, this set is supposed to have a 16:9 compress mode, but it is not in the menu or the manual.

Your link doesn't work. If you can't access it via the normal user menu, I can't help you. Setting both the TV and DVD player to 4:3 (4:3 letterbox on DVD menu) should yield a normal image without distortion.

Why would a 4:3 tv have a 4:3 expand on it?
