Napoleon Dynamite's uncle Rico already told us that it doesn't work. Dr. Emmett Brown has had some success with them though.

Don, actually it should be very easy.

Once your Mac discovers an external drive it will bring up
a dialogue box asking if you want to use Time Machine with it.

That simple.

Also look into TimeMachineScheduler if you want precise times
that you want Time Machine to back up instead of every hour.

Exactly what Ron said. I am using a Seagate FreeAgent Pro external hard drive (with Firewire connection) and the Time Machine setup on my iMac was totally automatic.

Plug in your external hard drive. If the Time Machine prompt doesn't appear shortly, go into system preferences and click the Time Machine Preferences. There, you'll find a button to select the hard drive to use, and a button to enable Time Machine.

Don,

Go into System Preferences (GEAR ICON in DOCK). Under SYSTEM
is TIME MACHINE. You can set it up there.

There is basically nothing to set up. Connect hard drive. Tell Time Machine to use that drive. Turn on Time Machine.

You're done.
