can you guys point me to some sites w/ advice on how to calibrate the sub loudness and speakers w/ an spl meter? i'm guessing you sit in the listining position and point the meter at each speaker? but the sub is kind of beyond me. and also any sites on how to tweak my tv for the best picture?

If you have a DVD player, pick up Avia or Video Essentials. They will walk you through your calibration with test tones. You cannot calibrate without the tones (pink noise).

Analog SPL meter from Radio Shack will work perfect. The test tones built into most receivers are often different than the ones on either of those discs, but they should work fine.

    Kyle,
As others have stated, just get the Avia DVD and a
Radio Shack Sound Pressure Level Meter. The Avia DVD
will explain how to use the meter, and much more.
    The cost:
    1) Avia DVD abt 50 USD.
    Avia HT DVD
    2) Radio Shack Analog Sound Pressure Level meter.
    abt 40 USD.
