I have an Onkyo receiver that has a "simul-source" mode...a separate source can be playing in a second room with independent volume control.

I have used this for several years and would like to increase the funtionality:

Extending the second source to more than one room and have the ability to control the volume in each room

Have speakers in multiple rooms with the ability to select
independently control the source and volume in each room.

I'd like to keep this at the DIY level. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I don't think you'll be able to do that like you want to.

If there is only 1 set of pre-outs (L/R) for the multizone/simul-source then the only way I can see to run it to more than one room is to use a "Y" Adapter and split the preouts into two. It wont be like mutiple rooms each plaing separate sounds with independant volume control, but mutiple rooms playing the same sound at the same volume.

You then would have to turn on the amp to the room you want to use and have the other ones off. Or you have them both on, but the volume will be the same for both.

Anyone else want to shed some light on this? Am I hitting the nail on the head, or did I just smash my toes with the hammer?
