Based on the excellent transfers that Paramount gave other 70's movies like The Conversation and Marathon Man, I am expecting Serpico to look really good. I hope I am not wrong. Any early reviews ? The release date is barely a week away ...

Just watched the dvd including all of the extra material and I think fans of this film will be very happy that Paramount did a fine job with this dvd release. The dvd's picture quality of this film is the best I've seen since it's initial theatrical release back when I was in high school in 1973. There are two english audio options with a 5.1 DD Surround and a restored mono track. There are four short featurettes that range from 3-12 minutes in length which feature the director Sidney Lumet and the producer of the film Martin Bergman. Also, there is a nice surprise feature, the dvd includes the theatrical trailer which lasts a little over 4 minutes in length. All in all, I'm very pleased with this dvd and it's another outstanding job by Paramount.

thanks for the review, not that I needed the review. So many great dvds get released these days that slip under the radar. Good thing about the HTF for keeping me up to date.
Gordy, did you watch Thing from Another World last night

There's a commentary by Lumet on the DVD too, C-Daddy! [IMG]
    Or is there?!
Thanks for the capsule review! I like Serpico a lot and I am grateful to Paramount for doing a fine job on this DVD. Heck, at this rate, Paramount might soon be regarded as a great DVD distributor! [IMG] Heh heh heh!
    Thanks again.

I'm sorry, but I didn't see any film commentary by Lumet except a brief photo gallery featurette with his commentary.

    In reply to Robert Crawford:
It looks like many DVD e-tailers got their wires crossed or something as many of them mention, "Audio Commentary by Sidney Lumet", but if that's just for the gallery, then that's a bit disappionting as Lumet is a great speaker. Still a great package though. Just as well you told me there is no feature commentary now, as it's a much softer let-down! [IMG]
    In reply to Oscar Merkx:
No, I didn't see Hawks', The Thing last night. Was it on TV? I don't watch TV very much these days - it's evil! [IMG] Anyway, I'd rather wait until a glorious DVD edition of the film is released before I experience it again. It's a great little film and a DVD documentary that tied up the Nyby-Hawks-Welles confusion would be most welcome!
    Thanks guys.

For the most part, Paramount has done a very good job with their catelogue dvd releases in 2002.

the only problem i ever had with Paramount was their pricing structure. They seem to have changed this though, with major price reductions on older catalog titles, and new titles, streeting around $20, after store discounts.
apart from their excessive pricing, i never understood all the animosity that Paramount seemed to engender on these kind of forums.
I can't wait to see their output in '03
Foul Play, Captain Kronos (w/ Caroline Munro commentary!!),
    Targets...just to name three.

good news about Serpico and The Duellists.
i'll be checking out both of those.

    Paul,

The story I have always heard (be it true or not)
is that since Viacom owns Blockbuster as well as
Paramount, prices are kept high in order for rentals
    to flourish.

I just got this DVD last night and it did not have an insert...I thought Paramount didn't start releasing titles sans inserts until last year. Did they also stop making inserts for titles that used to have them or did Serpico never have an insert? Anyone buy this title when it came out and get an insert? It's a small thing, but it matters to me.

I'm sure I read a while back that Serpico was going to get the SE treatment, is there any truth to this? Or would I be as well to buy the current edition & have it shipped to the UK?

No need (unless you have PAL speedup pitch issues) - the R2 version is identical to R1.
