Thanks Noach.

Do you have any other info or links? Release label? Warners? So far I can't find any info on Amazon.de.

Want this very much if it is an official HD transfer from a trustworthy label.

Great film that adds meaning to the phrase: "get my ducks in a row".

Far more than a possibility. New elements are in restoration, as the camera negative no longer exists. The German would be from old elements, unacceptable to cinephiles.
I'm not surprised based on a previous conversation I had with a Warner executive. It's just taking longer than I anticipated.

Well I originally reported this in The Swashbuckler thread, & posted a link. I see it's released by Schröder Media, who also released this on DVD in Germany a couple of years ago. I suppose it's all down to what elements they have, I'd think that Warner have the "good stuff" in America (& I've just seen Mr Harris post), but at the rate they're releasing 30s & 40s b/w films, it could be a long while before it gets a release.

This favorite of mine ranks on my "Most Surprised It Doesn't have a Blu-ray Release" list. Hawks and Cooper? Seriously?

As said earlier the elements are in bad shape, but are being worked on by Warners. I will wait patiently for them to finish and release. When they are ready I am sure WAC will release it. I would want nothing less than what WAC works on.

I'm not really understanding this old thread from 2017 on the Sergeant York restoration as way back in 2008 it was selected by the library of Congress for a complete restoration. This was 11 years ago. Not many films get selected for this process and that tells me that Warner Brothers has nothing to do with spending any kind of their own money for restoring this movie. More than likely it is the taxpayers or donations that are funding this or both. After 11 long years it should already be done with the restoration.

"In 2008, Sergeant York was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

In 2006 Warner Brothers did release this on DVD and it certainly looks like to my eyes that it probably doesn't even need much more restoring. Perhaps a new 4K scan and some other light restoration work. Certainly not a full blown restoration. The print on the DVD is sharp and contrast levels are good. Since it is black and white none of the color problems to deal with.

From the screen captures from dvdbeaver of the German blu-ray release it probably is in better shape than the majority of films from the 1940's even before the library of congress restoration.

On the warner archive web site the top 50 best selling blu rays are nearly all from classic Hollywood. Yet Warner each month releases low budget B horror movies and the dreadful Teen Titans animated TV shows that register in the 3000's under their best selling MOD titles. Not anywhere near the 56 all time MOD best seller of The hanging tree. They do release some classic Hollywood like the two Bette Davis movies, the thin Man and Gaslight but very few and it's all mixed in with animation and low budget B pictures. Are younger people making the decisions at WB that may not be that big on classic black and white movies? Or did this movie get hurt to bad during Vietnam for being a propaganda picture even though the film was based on true information on sergeant York?

Sergeant York received 11 academy award nominations including best picture and won 2. What is the hold up on releasing it on Blu ray in the united states? Any other picture with this many nominations would have been released on blu ray years ago.

I just made the purchase for the German blu ray of Sergeant York. At 52. I might not live long enough to see an official US Blu ray release of it.

Just one final question. How long does it take to restore a movie that probably doesn't even need a restoration? My guess is that at least 11 years so far. And how about Friendly Persuasion. Well I guess that is another topic for another time.

I too dislike the low budget horror releases and am patiently waiting for YORK and other noms to be released. However, I realize Warners can't just release only one type of film; they have to release a wide variety of genre to appease many.

But I do agree that 11 years is too long to wait to release a classic like YORK. But, with Warner's absurd 100% perfect or nothing mentality, they may be trying to find 17 seconds of missing footage somewhere. That's what held up a release for VIVA VILLA! and is holding up (I believe) a release for DISRAELI.

Or maybe, for all we know, it's been licensed out, maybe to Criterion, who doesn't always release stuff right away. Case in point: we *think* they have at least the 1936 Showboat, as the WAC DVD has been OOP for more than a year now, and yet, with Criterion having announced as far as February 2020, still nothing yet (although that film might possibly be getting slowed down if they also licensed the other Showboats). Again, I don't know, but I do agree that this is a movie I have been waiting for the last few years after this thread hinted at it being in the process of being restored.
