Titan just announced that last week, so I expect it will take a few months. Their press release has a sign-up address to receive updates if you're interested. Here's their press release:
Do we still not know how well this sold on DVD or HD-DVD? Man, I really want a sequel. I'm sure with a lot more exposure on the home media front, a sequel would do much better in the cinemas.
No actual sales figures that I'm aware of, just a lot of guess-work from hopeful fans. I see its sales ranking at Amazon as a good sign (if not necessarily indicative of the overall sales):
That it's still in the Top 100 so many months after release, when other big studio releases from around the same DVD or theatrical release dates are in the thousands, is encouraging. A few examples: Into the Blue (4,889); Brothers Grimm (1,318); Four Brothers (4,193); Flightplan (1,277). Serenity, at the time I looked up all of these, was sitting at #87. Figures are for the widescreen versions of each release; typically the fullframe versions are much, much lower.
The series is doing even better, which doesn't put money in Universal's pocket, but helps in growing an audience for a possible sequel.
The movie premieres on HBO next week and I wouldn't be surprised to see a little bump in the sales, as there was after it started airing on Cinemax a little over a montha go.
Boy, that was a long way around saying "no," wasn't it?
Well, if "Serenity" is the last word on "Firefly", it was a heck of a valedictory film, which tied up a lot of loose ends (though not necessarily every loose end).
If those sales numbers are accurate, and I'm hoping they are, then Serenity is selling quite well I would really love to see more of the Firefly setting from Josh, it is perhaps the best TV show I've seen IMO.
And, again, "Firefly" is doing even better, showing at the moment at #51.
Not surprisingly, there was a nice bump in sales at Amazon coinciding with its premiere on HBO. Just a shame that it didn't get as good a timeslot and as much promotion as, say, "Fantastic Four" is getting. But I hope more people are able to check it out on HBO and are pleasantly surprised. I don't know if Universal's HD channel is in enough homes for there to be a discernable bump when "Firefly" starts airing there later this month, but I think it's all good for building an audience for a sequel.
BTW, as point of comparison, an update on the figures I cited earlier: "Flightplan" is currently at #2,591 (-1,314); "Into the Blue" shows at #8,694 (-3,805); "Four Brothers" is at #2,944 (+1,249); "Brothers Grimm" is at #2,708 (-1,390). If you want to check out these or any other sales rankings, they're on each item's product page, down towards the bottom of the Product Details section. I believe they're updated hourly.
Again, I know that Amazon's sales aren't necessarily indicative of overall sales, but I think it's encouraging. If this had sunk like a stone when the DVD first came out, if the only revenue we had to go by was the disappointing theatrical run, we'd have no hope of a sequel. But the DVDs seem to be doing well, so I'm still hopeful.
I'm not sure we really need a sequel, as Joss wrapped up a lot of loose ends with the movie. I would like to see the deleted scenes restored in a "director's cut", though.
Despite the Return of the Jedi references, he doesn't really give an indication that the film will be rejiggered. Just more extras, a commentary if they can get enough people, and something about nookie art.
The released film was the director's cut. If you listen to the commentary on the deleted scenes, Joss explains why he removed them -- mostly sacrificed to the Goddess Momentum, IIRC.
Great, it's about time Universal forked over the goods. There were a whole bunch of extras on the R4 disc that weren't included in the R1 version. And a cast commentary with this cast will be Too Much Fun. Plus, you know, NEW KEY ART. Hopefully this time without llamas.
BTW, if you're interested in seeing the film again on a big screen, this year's "Can't Stop the Serenity" events have begun organizing for showings on or near the weekend of June 22-24:
Each event is put on by a different fan group, so each one's a little different. I had a lot of fun at ours last year; looking forward to an even bigger, better event this year.
It has been a while since I watched it, but I recall that some scenes involving Inara were cut because a moviegoer unfamiliar with the show would not have known about Inara's work as a Companion, so they removed references to her work and portrayed her as just another passenger. However, most of the fans of the movie IMO are fans of the show (look at the pathetic box office), so there was no need to cut those scenes. And I am for leaving in more of Inara's scenes whenever possible.
Yeah, reading about a special edition coming on digitalbits today makes me figure I will sell my current one on ebay. I like the movie and all, but I don't know that I will double dip unless there is at least DTS and some pretty great extras.
