My father in-law (who lives in BC) is going to be bed ridden for about 4 months. He doesn't have a DVD player. Would it be cheaper for me to buy one here and send it to him or have him get one there? I have no idea how much duty the Canadians have to pay. I also could not find a Bestbuy.com in Canada and don't know what the prices are there.

Hi Jim, you can buy a low end DVD player here for $100 Canadian dollars or a mid level Sony for $160. Sending from the U.S. will incur taxes and duty. Try searching Future Shop, they are a chain in Canada which I believe is owned by Best Buy. You should be able to get a decent player for approx. $100 U.S. Hope this helps.

Agree on an inexpensive (sub 200$) item like a DVD player you are unlikley to save any $ shipping from US after excange, duty and shipping. Even if you do it's not like you'd save $100 you'd maybe end up saving $5 if any. Plus you have warrantey issues shipping from US. Buy it in Canada.

You can send it as a 'gift', which it really is, and there will be no duties or taxes. Definitely use USPS and not one of the courier companies.

Send it as a gift doesn't work anymore as customs still tax based on the value you declared. You can put $0 but you can't buy insurance if you do that.

    Check out www.futureshop.ca.

I wouldn't bother mailing it as the receiver will be dinged taxes/duty, even if it is a gift (unless you can convince them it's a DVD player worth less then CDN$45). Borders suck!

Gift does sort of work its just that it has to have a declared value of less then $50 and you can't have insurance for more then its declared value so you either take a risk and under value the item or get insurance and pay the piper. Really given the cost of a cheaper DVD player I'd suggest just buy it at futureshop and have them ship it to him.

Go to FutureShop.com and pay for it and send it to him that way, from there. I have done it with family and it's easy. He will then have a valid warranty & service too.

The other option if you want to go Sony is to buy it on the Sony Canada web site - www.sonystyle.ca. They are offering free delivery I believe.

You will pay through the nose if you buy direct from Sony...

Good point. You also get less of a warranty. You are probably better off to order from Oade Brothers.
