I’m finalizing my home theater design for a 5.1.2 Atmos setup in a room with a sloped ceiling and could use some technical advice on optimal speaker placement. The ceiling pitch is about 20 degrees, which is causing some concerns with the placement of the Monitor Audio CP-CT260 in-ceiling speakers for the Atmos channels.

Gear:

  • Front L/R: Monitor Audio Super Slim WSS130 in-wall speakers
  • Center Channel: Monitor Audio matching center (still debating whether to stick with Monitor Audio or switch to a more compatible option like the ELAC Debut Reference for better synergy)
  • Rear Surrounds: Monitor Audio WSS130 in-wall speakers (considering mounting vs. stands)
  • In-Ceiling Atmos: Monitor Audio CP-CT260 (concern about angle due to sloped ceiling)

Main Challenges:

  1. In-Ceiling Placement with Sloped Ceiling:
The CP-CT260 ceiling speakers are designed for flush mounting, but given the ceiling’s slope, I’m unsure whether I should angle them directly towards the listening position or leave them at a fixed angle. If angled, I would need to ensure the speaker dispersion doesn’t affect the overhead soundstage for Atmos. Any advice on how to mitigate unwanted reflections or potential sound diffusion issues with the pitch?
  2. Speaker Synergy:
Considering I’m going with Monitor Audio in-wall speakers for the front L/R and rear surrounds, would it be best to stick with the Monitor Audio center for tonal consistency, or can I mix and match with an ELAC Debut Reference center for better performance in a larger room? I’m aware of potential differences in tonal character and would like to avoid any issues with center channel clarity.
  3. Room Orientation:
I’m contemplating reorienting the seating arrangement by rotating the room 90 degrees to avoid direct sunlight exposure and to improve symmetry. The room dimensions and layout could benefit from better soundstage width and rear surround coverage. Would this shift be a good move acoustically, or would it mess with speaker dispersion, especially for the Atmos channels?

Additional Considerations:

  • Speaker Stands for Front L/R: I plan on using high-quality stands for the front L/R to avoid wall reflections, but am open to feedback on how to place them optimally for the best imaging and low-end response.
  • Wire Routing: I’ll be running 12-gauge speaker wire for the entire setup, with a focus on minimizing impedance drops over distance. Any recommendations on cable management to ensure signal integrity, especially for the ceiling-mounted speakers?
I would appreciate any technical guidance on these points, particularly regarding Atmos speaker angle adjustments, in-wall speaker synergy, and room acoustics for an optimal setup.

One quick suggestion. I heartily recommend looking at On-Wall speakers, instead of in-wall. There will be essentially no sonic or visual difference, but it won't be the epic hassle if, more like when, you want or need to replace them.

I would definitely wanna stick w/ at least same maker (and preferable series/line) to better match the center w/ the front L/R speakers.

But why did you guys choose these Monitor Audio options that don't seem to have good matching (in-wall) center? Is it really just because they're slim?

Also, if you're going to have to choose a regular center speaker anyway, why not just go w/ regular front L/R too (and just place them like you would that center speaker)? I would think the center would be more of the eye-sore than the front L/R flanking the screen, if that's the issue.

Since you're considering ELAC anyway for that center channel, I would just go w/ ELAC at least for front L/C/R and just place them up against the wall like John suggested. You could probably get all ELAC centers for front L/C/R and just orient them perpendicularly for the L/R unlike the center -- you could also do the same for the surrounds too, if you want absolute best match. Those centers should still give you that likely desired slimness (and be cheaper than getting the matching bookshelves or floorstanding models). Just hang them on the wall like John suggested. But yeah, going w/ that ELAC center for front L/C/R would be more expensive for the speakers themselves, but would also save you some $ and hassle on the installation (and maybe eventual deinstallation/etc) side though.

IF you don't want them sticking out into the room so much, maybe you can also install them into the wall as deeply as you can instead... Depending on the actual acoustics involved, maybe the ELAC Debut Reference center can still sound a tad better than those Monitor Audio WSS130s even if installed all the way flushed into the wall...

My second suggestion. A couple small shelves are a lot easier to work with than in-wall speakers. Just get speakers with front ports, and you can basically place them right up against the wall on small shelves. So... why not go ELAC Debut all the way around? They have wall a mount mount model for the surrounds.

I imagine that could also actually yield somewhat better sonic results than hanging on walls (or into walls), if they're willing to go that route.
