I have a Toshiba SD-5970 dvd player with HDMI. When listening to audio cd's there is a scratchy type of distortion in the sound. This only happens, however, when I listen to a CD, not with a dvd. And only when using digital sound output (tried both coax and optical and I still get distorted sound). Analog L/R cables work fine and give off no distortion whatsoever. Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

I wish I could help you. However, my Samsung DVD player sounds just fine with DVDs, but displays, shall we say, "analogue artifacts" when playing CDs. These artifacts are clicks and pops just like on old records! This is perfect for those who like vinyl, but part of the reason I gave up vinyl was the clicks and pops.

Fortunately, I still have my Sony carousel CD player, which still works fine.

Thanks anyway Jack. I'll have to content myself with playing my music through my computer for now.
