Scratched discs (1 Viewer)

Can a scratched disc damage a DVD player? I rented Bram Stoker's Dracula from Blockbuster last night, and the disc had some rather large scratches on it. I decided to play it on my DVD player(a cheap, old Sharp) despite the scratches, though, as I'll be replacing my player very soon. Bad idea?

Broken or cracked discs could be a problem, but I don't see how scratches alone would damage the player. Did the disc play?
