If I scan an .exe file and it's virus-free, will all the files it installs after I run it be virus-free too?

I'm not positive on this, so please take what I say with a grain of salt. But I think that it is possible for a .exe to be scanned and have zero viruii yet the files it install have a virus. the reasoning I'm using on this is that the .exe might not be properly scanned as it is a compressed file whie the scanner might not treat it as such.

now that's all speculation, if you have a .exe that you are worried about you can just install it and run another scan for viruii, I doubt that a virus could cause to many problems if you don't give it any time.

If you use a real-time virus scanner that scans files as they are accessed or created, and the install extracts an infected file, the virus scanner should catch it immediately.
