I'm new to this stuff. I'm buying a NEC HT1000 DLP projector. What can a line doubler/scaler do for me? Can it make a widescreen movie fit the screen better coming from this 4:3 machine? If so, is the "Deuce" line doubler a good one?

Gustov, little if anything. The NEC HT1000 comes with a Faroudja deinterlacing chip and a high quality internal scaler. Adding external processing is not necessary. You might notice a subtle improvement if you added a scaler or HTPC that can process and output the source in the digital domain, but the improvement wouldn't be any more than subtle.
