Wow. I can't believe that this is hitting before Grease!!
As I stated in a separate thread, perhaps they can use seamless branching to include both the "R" and "PG" cuts of the film. You know...the ones both with and without the infamous "backseat blowjob"? [IMG]
I certainly want the all-inclusive ("R") version above all else, but since a PG version was released THEATRICALLY then I'll take the other alternate version AS AN OPTION.
In any case, thank you Martin for the info! You're great, sir!

How the hell did they secure the music rights for this? Oh well, too bad Gene Siskel couldn't be alive for the release. I've never seen a man so passionate about a movie as he was for this.

I hope they include the scene where Travolta is dancing to Disco Duck.

WOW. What great, great news. [IMG] Thank you, Martin!
I'm not too surprised we're getting Saturday Night Fever before Grease. I'm also thrilled. Though it is the less popular of the two, SNF is -- as Siskel, rest in piece, would agree -- by far the better film, one that if watched outside of the fog of dated fashions actually holds up as a cinematic work. It also contains one of the two best performances ever by John Travolta -- now such an insufferable actor, occasionally a great one.
As Martin has said so many times, when it comes to these two '70s musical hits, it's all about the rights, and while SNF's are complicated -- Travolta reportedly owns a stake of the soundtrack rights, even though he doesn't perform on it -- Grease's are staggeringly so. Even before you factor in the recent Olivia Newton-John lawsuit, there's the rights to the original play, the complicated songwriters' and performers' royalties (from both the original play and the songs written just for the movie, like Barry Gibb's "Grease" song for Frankie Vallie), and...well, don't take my word for it. Just yesterday, the following seemingly unrelated item appeared on Salon.com :

I'd just like it noted for the record that my smart alec remark in that thread was the impetus for the announcement. [IMG]

A few years ago there was a major decision
as to whether GREASE or SATURDAY
NIGHT FEVER were to be totally restored
    for a retheatrical release.
    GREASE won.
I remember reading how SNF Director John Badham
was terribly upset that he did not have the
opportunity to have his film restored.
It is my HOPE that Paramount does everything
possible to ensure that Badham sees his dream
come true -- a totally restored edition of this
    film.
It's nice to read (and I still can't believe it)
that Paramount is finally putting this title into
    production.
    Thank You, Martin!

I'll take SNF over Grease anyday. While Grease is a great
film (and would be a wonderfull DVD), I could wait for it.
I can't wait for this one!! I remember seeing this as a teen
    and thinking Travolta was god!

    1. I'd be interested to see how people would react if it didn't come out when Martin says. This isn't an official announcement. "Down for" means "We plan to release it". Things could come up. As much as we're appreciative and giddy for Martin giving us the scoop, I hope we'd understand if things come up.
    2. I like SNF much more than Grease, though I originally saw SNF in the theaters and Grease only on TV.
    3. I also would like Staying Alive (or is it Stayin' Alive). In fact, I own it on VHS.
