As of today, no it's not coming out any time soon. Read the Studio Day report from a week or two ago.

Saturday Night Fever and Grease are being
    held up by music rights.
Paramount was actively persuing GREASE but
not SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER for release. Martin
Blythe of Paramount told us that it will be
    quite some time yet.
    A shame.

Can someone explain this music rights issue as it relates to films?
Does the studio have to secure rights to the music for each release (theatrical, VHS, DVD)?
    Thanks,

It's nice to know that somebody's greed is resulting in zero compensation for everybody and disappointment for millions of fans.

I may be wrong (I was once back in 1975... I think?), but contracts weren't always written to cover all formats of releases and sometimes the copyright agreement lapses (they don't last forever after the movie is released) before a new format can pick it up. They didn't have any knowledge of DVD back when "Saturday Night Fever" was released in 1977. A P&S 1:33 version was released in 1979 on Laser Disc and the VHS version was out earlier.
I think I remember the culprit being the Bee Gees who is holding up the whole works?
The closest we will come to a classic Disco movie will be next year's release on Anchor Bay of "Can't Stop the Music" featuring the Village People.
I wonder if Columbia Pictures has any plans for the 1978 release of "Thank God It's Friday" on DVD?

Can someone PLEASE explain why the format of the media makes a s--t of a difference? I've been hearing crap like this since the early 90's. "Oh it's help up because of music rights". Err...so? It's on VHS, why is DVD such a big deal?

    Mike,
We have been trying to tell you....
From everything I have been told...
DVD is another ball of wax.
When licensing had been made for films like
    GREASE and SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER
(to name a few), they covered only the two
existing formats of the time: VHS & LASERDISC.
Since the introduction of DVD, the process starts
all over again as new rights have to be secured.

    Mike,
It just doesn't work that way. Remember, there was 18 years between the Laser Disc version and when DVD was first introduced! Contracts lapse and copyright laws change (as do artists minds). There is also the red tape and politics of both the movie and music industry. It's all about $$$
