just got a sattelite dish system and hooked it into my home theater system. Everything works great but somebody told me you can't watch one channel on the dish while taping another dish channel with the vcr. is this true. I tried it a little but had no luck. maybe there is a different setup to do this. thanks for the help

    I believe you are correct.

Now if you had a dual tuner receiver you could do that of course...I have a dual on my Directv Ultimatetv but haven't taken the time or money to run a multiswitch to both tuners.

For me I just record what I want on the bedroom dish setup and watch whatever else on the "main" system.

Alf is right - you need a dual tuner Tivo or some other PVR.

Jeff, did you buy DirectTV or Dish Network?

Dish Network has something called a "PVR" Personal Video Recorder. This thing records shows like a VCR, but:

    - The recording is bit-for-bit identical to the orignal broadcast.

    - You have the ability to pause/rewind live broadcasts

Once you use one of these, you will never touch your VCR again.

The PVR-501 is a single-tuner unit (you can play something back while recording another channel) and the PVR-751 (?) is a dual-tuner (record 2 shows at once, watch one while recording another).

Either one will change the way you watch TV.

If you have DirectTV, they have a single-tuner PVR called "Direct Tivo". I dont know if they have a dual-tuner unit yet.

Note: Some of the services are offering 2 receivers free. You can dedicate one to your VCR and the other one to the TV. This would also solve your problem, but be a little complex to use.

Call your service and see if you can upgrade.

ACtually, Bob, it's the PVR-721 that has the dual tuner. It also has a 120 gig hard drive and will record up to 90 hours.
You can watch one show while recording another, record two shows at the same time, and record two shows while watching a third that was previously recorded.
