Samsung's 146" The Wall Wins TechRadar 'Best Home Theater Product' at CES
One of the undisputed must-sees at this year's CES was Samsung's modular self-emitting MicroLED 146" TV, known as 'The Wall', and this morning it was awarded TechRadar's 'Best Home Theater Product' at the show. TechRadar is one of the most widely-read global consumer technology websites, and its annual awards program honors the most innovative gadgets and electronics showcased at CES. Its expert panel considers product design, engineering and stand-out innovation, spanning 20 categories from car tech to cell phones.
"Major brands and fans alike rely on TechRadar for its honest approach and knack for catching the latest trends and devices," said Gareth Beavis, interim global editor in chief at TechRadar. "This trust-driven relationship makes TechRadar's judgment widely-respected and valued throughout the tech industry as well as at key events like CES."
Debuted at Samsung's annual 'First Look' CES event, The Wall was featured alongside the company's latest display tech innovations, including the 'centralised connected smart hub' concept.
Samsung claims The Wall delivers 'incredible' definition, without size restrictions, resolution or form, and because of its micrometer scale LEDs - which are much smaller than current LEDs - they serve 'as their own source of light'. Furthermore, The Wall eliminates the need for color filters or backlight, and the screen is purported to excel at durability, luminous efficiency, lifetime of light source, and power consumption.
The module-based, bezel-less design means consumers can customize their TV sizes and shapes to suit their needs, while Samsung also claims that the screen's ability to adapt to serve different purposes means that wall-size displays can be created for multiple spaces.
"At Samsung, we are dedicated to providing consumers with a wide range of cutting edge screen experiences," said Jonghee Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. "As the world's first consumer modular MicroLED television, 'The Wall' represents another breakthrough. It can transform into any size, and delivers incredible brightness, color gamut, color volume and black levels. We're excited about this next step along our roadmap to the future of screen technology, and the remarkable viewing experience it offers to consumers."
No information on pricing yet, detailed specs, nor availability date, but it's a pretty safe bet that it will be more wallet-heavy than your 1080P projector. If modular TVs prove to be the future, though, it could reinvent the home theater landscape, and certainly redefine how we upgrade on our screen sizes at home. We're carefully watching this space...
