We went to CC yesterday and they had the new Samsung DLP 50" on its own stand with the 3 speakers on each side.

This was the pedestal DLP. I asked the sales guy if it was the new one, and he said it was the 3A chip.

Can't find any info on that TV at the Samsung website...looked decent, anyone have any specs on it?

Thanks

It might be the set with the 8 segment color wheel.
It has a 10,300 rpm speed, which is supposed to eliminate rainbow effect.
I could be mistaken.

Never heard of it called a 3A chip...

The HLP5085 and HLP5685 are based upon the TI HD2+ chip.

Very nice sets...

When I was at CC recently they were spouting alot of bull about this set: said it was 1080i.

Still a nice set though...if you have $4200.

I work around that TV everyday, and while the raindow effect is not that bad, I still see it.

The biggest thing that set has going for it is black levels.

There is one shot on the demo loop where they are showing baseball stuff. In one shot there is a black guy. One some of the TV's, you see almost no contrast, while on the new Samsung, you can actually see detail in his skin! BIG difference. However, on other stuff, it is less noticable.

I bet the difference on LOTR would be huge.

I thought the PQ was great.

When they take the guts of the set and put it in a tabletop unit that sells for $2500, I'm in....

Still don't know why I can't get an HD2+ -based front-projector anywhere near as cheaply as I can buy this set.
Ideas?
