Is there a SACD player that is under $500 that doesn't convert dsd to pcm BEFORE you hear it.

    I'm just curious.

Probably any Sony player. Check out the DVP-NS755V. It's only about $200 and should do straight DSD-Analog.

I'm not sure about the 755. I have it. When I change the mains to "Small" in the player so it redirects bass to the sub (for 2-channel SACDs), everything including upper treble sounds brittle and compressed like a regular CD. However, I don't know if it's the player that's causing a problem, or the receiver. I've read that some receivers, unless they have an "analog direct" setting, will take an analog signal, convert it back to digital to do its own crossover for the sub, then back to analog. My cheapie Sony receiver (STR-DE545) doesn't have an "analog direct" setting, so the problem might lie in the receiver.

Bass management is not applied to the multi-channel analog inputs of most current receivers, so there is no conversion inside the receiver. A number of new receivers are starting to apply bass management to these inputs, but I don't know if it is handled in the way mentioned.

Audio or Audio/video player? Why do you need this feature?

What about the Philips' 763 and 9xx?
Is it too much to ask such an inexpensive player to have no dsd - pcm conversion ?

    Thanks for your help guys.

    Ok, I have another question.
I'm considering getting an entry level player (obviously).
I LOVE dsd sound, but don't have 5.1 or a sub.

Here's my setup: The player would be plugged into a
Pioneer vsx-d509s receiver. and I have essentially 2 bookshelf speakers and a great pair of sony headphones.

    Would i need bass management?

Whats the difference between the 763 and 963?

I saw the acoustic sound ad for the 763 which got my interest really started.

If you don't mind adding DVD-A [IMG], the Pioneer 45a doesn't convert either.

Brian, bass-management is only for M/C playback. You'll be doing stereo. Your reciever would proably would do bass management, to a certain extent, if you hooked up a sub. If you don't need DVD playback, try to track down one of the last few Sony SCD-222ES's.

Otherwise, pick one of the uni players. There are some DVD-A's out there with stereo tracks, hmnn. For SACD bang for the buck you'd proably get the most out of the 222. You should look at the Pioneer Elite 45 & Denon 2200. I played my sister's Elite 45 in stereo when visiting her last summer. It's a cut below what I'm accustomed to but seemed OK for the money. The remote is pretty grubby though, it's even worse than Denon remotes IMO! Best wishes![IMG]

    Hi,
John Sunier, who owns the Audiophile Audition site, www.audaud.com replied to a similar question by saying "none of the Sony's".

BTW for HIREZ reviews you should check out his site as well.

Between he and Felix Martinez, I think I've got my bases covered.

OK Philip, I didn't state that very well. If you have a sub hooked up to the reciever, you're getting bass management. It was late when I wrote it...my brain was passed out and my fingers are full of it![IMG]

Does the Denon 2200 convert DSD to PCM?

    Hi Doug,
In a private e-mail to John (who uses a Sony player to do his reviews of sacd discs)I had asked him if my now discontinued Sony DVP-NC650V converted to PCM prior to sending the signal out. His response was "To my knowledge none of the Sony's do"

I apologize if the inference was that the info could be found on the site. My reason for mentioning it was twofold.
    1. The reviews posted there of HIREZ releases are both timely and comprehensive. 2. Since I consider him to be an expert on this type of stuff, his comment was an informed one.

I should have worded my comments differently.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I don't have a sub. Just two small speakers and great pair of headphones.

I'm trying to find the SCD-222es. That's my first choice even tho it's rare now.
