I bought a copy of the Police's "Every Breath You Take" SACD/hybrid in Target last night. They also had a bunch of copies of "Dark Side of the Moon", but not the SACD version. There were no copies of any other SACD in the store. Still, score one for SACD vs DVD-A.

Mark,

Thanks, I saw the older Dark Side of The Moon albums still in the store as well. I think there are some retailers trying to clean out inventory at lower prices. The Target music guy in my store said they should be getting a new shipment of the Floyd soon which is hybrid.

Hybrid seems to be the way to go for both hirez formats as a way to get into more mainstream venues...

That's because they're counted as regular CDs since they play as usual on a CD player. The SACD part is just a bonus.

Who is keeping score? I would seriously hope single inventory items are found everywhere.

Note: I thought the topic of this thread referred to SACD hardware actually being available at a mass retailer, I was mistaken.

Just note that the reason Target has the Police hybrid disc is that it replaced the Every Breath You Take: The Classics CD. Thus, the hybrid disc is the only current version of the compilation in print. Ditto for the Dark Side of the Moon hybrid. While this does enable SACD to get in the hands of the masses, I seriously doubt that most people buying these hybrids at Target know or care about hi-rez audio or even music in surround sound that isn't on a DVD.

One more thing. Notice how Target does not have the Police single-layer SACDs. Perhaps they are stocking or will stock the remastered CDs, but they won't stock the single-layer SACDs.

Thanks Phil for the information. You weren't thinking about picking up that system, were you? :)

Oh, the reason I suspect that you don't see single-layer SACDs at many chain stores is due to concern about people buying them thinking they are CDs and then returning them as "defective" when they won't play in their CD players. I was in a small-chain store yesterday that sells SACDs and saw four used copies of the Aerosmith O Yeah! SACD. Four! They only have around 30 new SACDs and generally have one or two used SACDs. I have never seen four used copies of an SACD anywhere. It would not surprise me if people bought these SACDs thinking they were CDs and then just sold them as used discs to recoup some cash.

By the way, if anyone wants a used Aerosmith SACD, head to the CD World in Cherry Hill, NJ (exit 34B off of I-295).

Justin, actually do not have a bathroom system at the moment so was looking into it.

Keith, suspect you are right about single layer discs which hopefully will disappear over time. I did pick up my copy of DTSOM at Wal-Mart since they had them out before release date. The Best Buy near my house puts SACDs in the DVD-A section and often has single layer Sony discs in the CD section. I usually move them to where they have the SACDs. On occasion, I've seen DVD-As in the SACD or CD section too.:b
