I own 10+ titles of each format, and I was wondering if any of you out there had any thoughts to share on what your favorite titles may be, or any recommendations of ones to pick up or avoid.

The best sounding SACDs I've heard are James Taylor's "Hourglass" and Billy Joel's "The Stranger", both MCH.

On DVD-A, Metallica's "Black" album, Queensryche's "Empire", "Bach: Organ Spectacular" featuring Ton Koopman, Grateful Dead's "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead".

I'll add a few to the list, maybe not your stylistic likings though:
DVD-Audio
  • Blue Man Group Audio Virgin
  • John McCuen/Jimmy Ibbotson Nitty Gritty Surround AIX Records
  • Glen Phillips Abulum Silverline
SACD
  • Bob Mintzer Big Band Homage to Count Basie DMP Records
  • James Taylor JT Columbia
That should add a few to Keith's list. I hate repeating titles that someone else already mentioned ;)
Regards,

James, the DTS track on the Two Against Nature disc is very good, but the DVD-Audio track is a real treat. It's probably my best-sounding DVD-Audio disc.

I will have to get this disc. The standard CD is coming to me free from BMG, but I know it won't compete with the DAD. There so much music to buy!

NP: Miles Davis In A Silent Way Sessions box set, Disc One

Mike,
Do you have the Hank Mobley DAD from Classic Records?
I know you like Mobley. They had a copy at Tower here in Atlanta.
For DVDA:
Much of the AIX catalog
Chesky Sampler
Bucky Pizzarelli: Swing
Queen: A Night at The Opera
Anything DAD from Classic Records but the Sinatras are very good. :)
For Super Audio:
James Taylor: JT
Rebecca Pidgeon: The Raven
Duke Ellington: Blues in Orbit
Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus
Sonny Rolling: Way Out West
FIM Music Sampler IV
Keb Mo: The Door
Charles Mingus: Ah Um
Michael Tilson Thomas and San Francisco Symphony: Mahler 6
Patricia Barber: Modern Cool
Alison Krauss: New Favorite
Willie Nelson: Stardust
Mark Levinson: Recordings at Red Rose Music
McCoy Tyner: New York Reunion
Chet Baker: Chet
Anything issued by APO these days is simply amazing.
:)

Hee-hee.

My roommate got the Hank Mobley DAD. It is very cool. I'm not buying it yet simply because I can just listen to his.

Can someone please explain to me how they have DADs of albums that are not on CD? WTF? Hank Mobley, Kenny Drew, and Lou Donaldson each have a DAD that I can not find as a CD. That just pisses me off. I hate the fact that I can only listen to them at home.

I got Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin' DAD from elusive disc but haven't gotten a chance to spin it yet. That is a great album, though, and the DAD should sound great.

NP: McCoy Tyner, Stanley Clarke, Al Foster, SACD (CD layer)

Mike,
Sorry for butchering Sonny's last name. Sometimes my brain moves faster than my fingers. :b

Well, there are some really wonderful people like Chad Kassem (APO, Acoustic Sounds) and Mike Hobson (Classic Records) who really care about the music and seek things that are classics but hard to find, sometimes not on CD, then they issue them on better formats like DAD, XRCD, and SACD. The consumer wins!
I love these guys, heck Chad even won the top blues award recently for keeping the blues alive. Hobson is a national treasure. I just can't wait to get my hands on some of his Led Zeppelin vinyl.
I need a turntable pronto. :)

HERE HERE!!!! I absolutely ADORE my 96/24 Classic DADs of Sam Phillips' "The Indescribable Wow" and "Cruel Inventions". Stunning audio.
