Forgive the cynicism but this - amongst many others - seems to me to be part of the Grand Plan of persuading people to buy the same title many times over.

It's a small scale, small screen, B&W film that looks perfectly fine on DVD and Blu-ray (I can't remember which I have) - and as our revered RAH might observe - there's little advantage in going to the trouble of making a 4K, except, of course, to sell it.

Still, it will doubtless keep many people happy until an 8K version becomes available.

Small screen? It is a widescreen movie, filmed after the industry switched over to wider photography. Your old DVD may be open matted in 1.37:1, but that's wrong.

And in another thread, I was just singing the praises of what 4K/HDR did to the startling image quality of The Maltese Falcon which I just bought and watched on 4K disc. I'd think the lushness of Sabrina would shine in 4K, but I adore the movie, so there's that.

If this movie was made in widescreen, why has Paramount been releasing it over and over again on DVD and Blu-ray in full screen only?

How did Kino get this Paramount title to begin with? I thought Paramount would hold onto it's Audrey Hepburn collection themselves and not license it out to anyone else.

I guess Kino is savvier than we give them credit for! 🤣

Matt, I bought the 4K digital of Sabrina on iTunes last year and it looks gorgeous. You're in for a treat! I'll be picking up this disc as well.

Kudos to Kino, as it appears they are porting over all the extras from the Centennial Collection DVD, including the "Paramount in the '50s: Retrospective" featurette that was omitted from the blu-ray:

• Brand New HD Master by Paramount Pictures – From 4K Scan of the Original 35mm Elements
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Joseph McBride, Author of Billy Wilder: Dancing on the Edge
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian/Writer Julie Kirgo and Writer/Filmmaker Peter Hankoff
• Audrey Hepburn - Fashion Icon: Featurette
• Sabrina’s World: Featurette
• Supporting Sabrina: Featurette
• William Holden - The Paramount Years: Featurette
• Behind the Gates - Camera: Featurette
• Paramount in the ‘50s: Retrospective Featurette
• Sabrina Documentary
• Theatrical Trailer

I don't think that's true. I know the VHS tapes and the first DVD were open matte, but many years ago for the first and only time I reviewed Sabrina on DVD in the Centennial Edition release (I think it was called that), and it was properly presented in widescreen.

I own the Centennial Collection and it's in Full Screen.

You're right. I no longer have that DVD package, but I went back to my 2008 review (saved on an old floppy drive so please excuse the terrible typesetting in bringing it over into a modern sphere) and here's what I said about the video quality of that DVD:

Matt, please don't take offence, but this is easier to read:

According to HTF theatrical aspect ratio expert Jack Theakston, Sabrina was intended to be shown theatrically at 1.75:1.
However this disc, as well as every other home video release of Sabrina I've ever seen, has framed it at 4:3. Clearly there is too much headroom, and one can only imagine how splendid a wide-screen anamorphically enhanced version of this movie would look. As it is however, this is a gorgeous transfer without a single age-related spot or speck to be seen. Sharpness is ideal, and the grayscale is so rich as to be breathtaking. In comparison to the 2001 release in the Audrey Hepburn Collection, this new transfer is much cleaner and offers slightly more contrast, making for a better defined image and with a deeper sense of depth to the picture. The film has been divided into 14 chapters.

No offence at all, only gratitude.

Is this a 4K UHD only release, or will a 1080p HD Blu-ray also be included? I ask because I'll soon be getting a 4K UHD Player for playing 4K discs in my new 4K Computer/Entertainment bedroom setup. However, in the living room, we're only set up for Blu-ray/1080p viewing. The Mrs. LOVES this film, BUT doesn't believe in replacing functioning TVs/Disc Players (She asked why I needed a new TV, when I already had a perfectly good one!), so the Blu-ray Disc would be for her viewing. I've long secretly thought the open matte SABRINA (1954) DVD I bought for her as a gift back in the 00's looks a bit like a dog's dinner, so to speak!

Also, does anyone know whether SABRINA is being issued in its proper 1.75:1 Aspect this time around?

CHEERS! :)

EDIT: OK, I see a 1080p Blu-ray IS included! The Amazon dot com to dot ca redirection bugaboo has recently resurfaced on my end after having disappeared in the late 2010s. I had to physically access the proper Amazon site to access the disc info! 🙄 Still don't see any mention about the Aspect Ratio, though.

Regarding the aspect ratio, I would be surprised if it’s not 1.85 like the 4K/Dolby Vision digital that’s been on iTunes since October 2023. It looks properly framed to my eyes.

Glad this set includes a blu ray that’s made from the new source material for the 4K.

I’ve never really seen Sabrina. It was TV on PBS many many years ago. It was on, but I was not engaged in viewing it. I’ve been meaning to watch it, so I’ll watch it via this new 4K disc.

I will not be happy until 16k, this movie truly deserves it

I watched my Blu-ray of Sabrina tonight. It is in widescreen, and it looked clean if not particularly sharp on my OLED. I'm sure a 4K master with HDR will up the visual game considerably.

I've only seen Sabrina in full screen and to me it looks better that way over widescreen. I just saw some screen caps from DVDBeaver and from what I saw, widescreen crops a lot of.
