S-Video SAT/VCR/TV (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Here's my setup...

RCA DP301 Dishnet Sat IRD, Toshiba VCR, Sony WEGA 50 LCD

I did have just coax coming from sat to vcr then coax going to TV. My sat picture was nasty - so I connected a s-video cable from my sat to my Video 1 connecion on my TV. The picture is great now. My question - If I tape(VCR) from my SAT it's using the coax connection and the picture is crap. How can I tape sat using s-video. I could go out and buy a JVC VCR that has s-video in and out to replace my sat to TV s-video connection. Would this still give me the same picture quality...

sat to TV using S-Video
VS.
sat to vcr using S-video then to TV using s-Video

I didn't know if going through the VCR would take away the picture quality.

I am a DirecTV user and own a JVC SVHS recorder. I have the second setup you describe -- sat to vcr using S-video then to my TV using S-video and I get a great picture and great recordings -- even when I am just recording in VHS (instead of SVHS). The only slight drawback is that you have to have the vcr on in order to get the S-video signal passed thru to the television -- SVHS machines will not pass the signal if the vcr is off. To me this is a minor inconvenience but your milage may vary.

I think the coax cable is the culprit. Try using A/V cable instead. At least between the VCR and TV. Worked great for me, till I got my Tivo !

I had my sat s-video out going to the TV input for watching live broadcasts and the sat composite video out going to the VCR input for taping. The s-video and composite video worked simultaneously and gave a pretty good taping picture as well. I once taped a PPV fight and passed it around work and got several comments on how good the picture was for a VCR recording.

how did you hook up your audio ?? - does your sat audio go to your tv or the vcr or the receiver ??

I think I had the audio and composite video running into the vcr, then out to the receiver and the s-video from the sat straight to TV. When watching live broadcast you just select VCR on the receiver and the input on the TV with the s-video. My sat had a digital out for sound too and I just selected Sat on the reciever to get my sound from it. If you don't have a reciever and have it all hooked straight to TV then I dont know what to tell you. If you ran the audio out on the vcr to the tv it would give you no sound when watching vcr tapes.

Maybe that JVC vcr is a good purchase if your not running a receiver. I'll tell you this tho, I just got a new Denon AVR-3805 receiver and you run either a component or s-video out to the TV (dependind on your TV whether it has component) and the receiver will convert all the other video signals and output them to whatever you used from receiver to TV.

Besides, If you have a 50 inch LCD without a surround receiver you should be commited!

If you have coaxial cables from beginning to end, and you get a crappy picture at the end of the road, that means only one thing: There’s a bad coaxial cable somewhere in the line. Ask any cable TV guy and he’ll tell you that bad coaxial cables are the culprit for probably 90% of all bad picture complaints they get.

I suggest disconnecting everything and try the cables one at a time and try to isolate the bad one(s).

Also, what kind of coaxial cables are you using? If you’re using those skinny things with the push-on connectors that come in the box with VCRs etc. – THROW THEM AWAY!!!. Those things are worthless. The connectors don’t grip the “F” post very well because they easily “spread out,” which only means a bad connection, and a bad connection gets lines and other video interference on the screen. Plus they are not RG-6 – which is the only kind of coaxial you should be using for satellite.
