What is S-Video Input and Output? Is it important and does all home theatres have this as a standard because in some I see S-video output and in some input...

    Sorry for my ignorance....

    TIA,

i think s-video first came out with super vhs tapes. it splits the signal into 2 parts. better than composit. not quite as good as component. it's very common for tvs to have it and dvd players too so they can hook up to tvs without component imputs.

A modern DVD player usually offers the 3 main video connectio types:

Composite - (Single RCA cable - usually yellow): baseline quality
SVideo - (funny 'keyboard' type connector): 20% better picture over Composite
Component - (3 composite video cables with RCA plugs): 25% better than Composite

Here are the devices that offer SVideo connections:

    VCR - not standard units
SVHS VCR's - these all have SVideo in/out
DVD players - these all offer svideo output
Sat Recievers - these all offer svideo output

No need to apologize - the Basics Fourm here at HTF is setup for people who want to learn about the technology. We have a very good Home Theater Primer & FAQ which can answer a lot of your basic questions.

    Enjoy your stay.
