I can get a JVC 7800 SVHS for $200 online and wonder if its tv tuner board is comparable to all the others, meaning better than many tv's but not WOW...

I better prefer my $150 midlevel Toshiba 6-head HiFi VCR fed with cabletv RF as a tuner for my trusty ol' Mits 27-inch, with RCA audio to my AVR and composite video to (S-Video capable) tv. Cable PQ is quite good now, actually.

Bill: I can't say that my JVCs are WOW, but they are very good. (BTW, my setup is OTA only. No dish or cable!)

I've ran Panasonic, RCA, Magnavox, Go Video and Sony (along with the JVCs of course.) The tuners on my JVC 4800 and 7800 are as good as I've ever had. From both picture quality (even on less than great reception) and stereo sound standpoint.

I completely agree that most TV tuners are often fairly poor. I don't/won't use the TV tuner in my setup at all...
